Auschwitz launches Facebook site
"The Polish authorities in charge of Auschwitz have launched an official site for the former Nazi death camp on the social networking website Facebook.

A spokesman said the move was aimed at reaching the younger generation and educating them about the Holocaust.

It follows the launch by Auschwitz - now a state museum - of a YouTube channel earlier this year.

More than a million people - 90% of them Jews - were murdered by the Nazis at Auschwitz during World War II."

1. No offense
but I just can't see myself becoming a 'fan' of Auschwitz.

the symbolism might not be a good thing.

and I wouldn't want to be in the "guestbook" either ...

It's weird ... how do you acknowledge that you are in the group that visits it??? Recognizer?

...indeed, being there is another chance to spread info about what auschwitz was.
it's good that they're there. and of course, they will be harassed by obscene deniers from all over the world. but i suppose they expect it.

3. I think that is more of an issue involving facebook's lack of terminology
They are very inflexible with their terms. Everything is positively phrased, either "like" or "fan". There's no "dislike" button to express your sympathy when someone posts "my bike got stolen" or something. Likewise I wish there was a value-neutral means of following people on facebook that doesn't involve being a "fan". It would be helpful for things like this.

4. Good, but there are many idiots (aka deniers) on fb. Maybe some will learn from it.
