Rexburg, Idaho advertises for new mayor
Source: The Oregonian

The city of Rexburg is turning to advertising to help fill its vacant mayoral post.

Former Mayor Shawn Larsen resigned last month, and the city council is trying to cast a wide net to attract qualified candidates to fill the job that pays nearly $59,000 a year. Acting mayor Chris Mann tells the Post Register he hopes the advertising process creates more transparency in the search for a new mayor.

The job description posted on the city’s Web site says being mayor is a full-time job that can extend into weekends and nights. Qualifications call for an ability to build consensus and duties include attending ribbon-cutting ceremonies, promoting the city and casting tie-breaking votes.

The application deadline is Oct. 23, but a hiring decision may be delayed until November after voters elect a new city council.

Rexburg is often referred to as the "reddest place in America," owing to the area's strong conservative majority and political trends. Since 1980 no Republican presidential candidate has failed to carry the county with less than 59 percent of the vote. In that same period Republican presidential candidates polled more than 90 percent of the county's vote on two occasions, Ronald Reagan in 1984 and George W. Bush in 2004. John McCain came close to this level in 2008, drawing 85 percent of the vote.

Readers may also recall that this is the town where kids chanted "assassinate Obama on the school bus ride-

And home to gubernatorial candidate Rex Rammell, who in response to a question about "Obama tags" during discussion of Idaho's wolf hunt, said "Obama tags? We'd buy some of those."

Spelling, grammar and critical thinking skills are optional... and not required on a daily basis.

That should be a draw for someone over in Freeperland.

5. Can they legally appoint someone to be their mayor from outside the city limits?
Doesn't appear that they can according to their state law.

Their mayor must be a qualified elector of the city. The city council can appoint someone from within or without the city council. But that only means they can appoint someone that is on the city council or is not a city resident that is not a council member.

But then again... they probably aren't that bright up there.

6. As long as he's a Mormon
Doesn't matter where he lives, as long as he's LDS. I'd be willing to bet that there is a higher percentage of LDS in Rexburg than in Salt Lake City.

7. Rexburg = BYU Idaho (the town is 95% Mormon)
I went to school there when it was called "Ricks College" and it was a two year school. The LDS Church converted it into an arm of BYU in order to make it a 4 year school a couple years ago.
