Is Blue Cross/Blue Shield in California a non-profit?
This was tossed at me by a Conservaturd when I was ranting about the proposed threat of rising health care costs put forth by AHIP. My point was that these insurers were in it solely for profit... his counter was that BC in CA was a non-profit :dilemma:

Any input would be appreciated.

1. Blue Cross in CA is Anthem, which is Wellpoint.
I should know. I pay those bastards enough.

4. That was my information as well.
I'm just trying to gather as much info as possible before replying back.

Thanks, Nikki

2. Back in the Stone Age, Blue Cross Blue Shield was non-profit, but not
in ages.

3. I am not sure. It may have started out that way. I know that the hospital in WI
where my sister and BIL work is, as she puts it, the most profitable not-for-profit hospital around. Maybe CA BC/BS is similar??

6. Do they even know what is a non-profit?
Here are some key questions to ask them:

1) Does anyone volunteer their time to the organization?

2) Do they have investors?

3) Are they traded publicly?

4) What is their not-for-profit status?

5) Do they have tax exempt status?

7. They started out that way, and were driven out of business
bought out by for profits who didn't want non-profit competition.
