My Mainstream Media Moment today
So, I wake up to the sound of NPR telling me that Obama just won a Nobel Peace Prize. My first thought was, "Damn, that was quick."

The morning goes along, I wonder why they would give it to him so early, blah de blah, then I get online and because AT&T is my ISP, to get to my email I have to look at their stupid 'news' splash screen and there, right across the top, is this headline:

"How Nobel Prize Could Hurt Obama"

Hey, you know what, AT&T Yahoo front page? Fuck you. Seriously. Every time I see an Obama headline on that page, it's negative. Even when something good has just happened. Cash for clunkers working? No, "Cash For Clunkers Working Too Well." Every time. So, you know, I expect that, and any time I see an Obama story on their portal I just ignore it.

But still. It really does take one's breath away. They actually managed to make having won a Nobel peace prize a negative.

You know, argue all you want about whether it was deserved. But what's not up for debate is the fact that there are a lot of people lurking in the bowels of the big news machine who are just never going to have a good word to say about Obama, no matter what happens.

:argh:

1. Shame on them.
I'm sorry you had to see that.

Bastids.

How in hell can winning a Nobel Peace Prize be negative?

:grr:

3. I can see disagreeing with the award rationally and civilly.
But to spoil this day is rude. And to spoil it with manipulative cr!p is disgusting.

2. It's disgusting. And we better get used to it
because every time he has any kind of success, this is going to happen.

I haven't had teevee for about six weeks. Maybe I'll just make it permanent and change my home page away from YaHeave!

6. Remember when we were never allowed to issue one iota of criticism of Bush?
How dare you criticize our President during a time of war?! How dare anyone imply that this great leader is just a facade?! How dare anyone question their motives?!

All the while, it was DAILY lies and absurdities coming out of his and Cheney's mouth.

4. That's pretty much exactly how I feel.
I woke up and read the news here on DU. I thought how odd the whole situation was, etc. etc. etc. But then I see Chip Reid pressing Gibbs on how Obama could accept such a thing when Ronald Reagan didn't get one and how this is such a terrible thing because it will divide the country because Republicans haven't won a Nobel Prize.

As I said in another post, I think discussing the issue is good, but it's not like Obama nominated and voted for himself. People are acting as though Obama did something wrong here. I don't understand that.

9. Chip Reid said that? Someone needs to tell Chip Reid
that when Obama invents a new form of poverty, wrecks labor, kills a bunch of gay people and exports torture, death and destruction all over the globe, he can give his back because then he'll be just like that old felon.

11. Don't look now, but the NY Times now has Adam Nagourney editorializing on the front page- again
Worthless writer who never misses a chance to denigrate progressives or the Democratic party and pass it off as "news."

12. I believe you can set up yahoo so it gets your mail from your ISP and you can skip ATT

I would never go to ATT's homepage for anything but that's just me - they are a dinosaur in more ways than one.

13. The idea that the real news was the "controversy" about this historic event
Edited on Sat Oct-10-09 12:56 AM by bleever

reveals how provincial our media has tended to become over the last X years.

The world applauds; we have a slap fight with the 23 percenters.

But we will overcome. We're America.

15. Both Positions Are True
The corporate-fascist captive media will never say anything good about Obama, just as they wouldn't about Clinton or Carter,

AND

as eager as the world is to recognize Obama, they could have waited until he actually DID something for world peace, besides not being George Bush, that is. There's a lot of verbiage out there, but actions speak a whole lot louder than campaign promises. And we've already seen too much backing and filling on them.

19. No such thing as a silver lining
The Republicans and their little yappy shih-tzus in the media will always fixate on the dark cloud. Never you mind that the cloud is coming from the stinking pit of their own policies, Republicans can not let good news for the United States go uncontested.

20. Same with fucking Comcast's homepage. It's been all negative about the Prize.
Apparently liberals criticized it, Republicans criticized it, it will hurt Obama, and Castro congratulated him. Those have been the banner headlines. :eyes:

21. With people purportedly on "our side" being just as negative, what can anyone expect?
Reading "Congratulations, now earn it!" according to one who is certainly, in presence, anything but a right-winger... yet said something that we would instantly identify as something only right-wingers would say...
