Did you see the headline about two horses doing a cheerleader?

Chronicle
Mustangs should not be harassing cheerleaders.

Warning: Many of the links in this post contain images that are inappropriate and not safe for work. Some of them depict images created by children with very dirty minds.

Apparently this story's been going around and around on sports blogs, but being that I don't care a whole lot about sports I didn't see it until someone sent me the Jezebel link.

The kids at Memorial High like to show their school pride by creating signs and cartoons depicting their mascot, the mustang, holding down and having their way with rival Stratford's cheerleaders. It's the most recent t-shirt with an image of two mustangs holding down one girl that's gotten the attention, but apparently it's a time-honored tradition...

8. That's in Houston. Memoriall High is at Ground Zero for the GOP ignorance bomb
Yes, the kids who go to Memorial are the shallow frat rats who go to college still acting like they're in junior high school. Sexual denigration of women is part of the social power structure that supports them. I'm not surprised they reflect those values, even if the parents who taught them to think that way do act "shocked and offended" once it all comes out.

11. Holy crap!

Recently there was a thread about a high school pep squad dance that was objected to by many parents because the moves were "suggestive". I watched the video of that dance and the girls were full clothed and other than a few "hip rotates" and one "butt shake" it was very tame. I was expecting stripper moves. Not even close.

But this Tee-shirt. Just wow. What were they thinking? What were the adults that allowed this thinking?

It's OK to show simulated bestiality because it's the rivals teenage cheerleaders depicted on the Tee-shirt?

WTF?

14. I just read the school's official statement about it:
Edited on Wed Oct-07-09 05:23 PM by Quantess
Statement on Inappropriate T-shirt (10/6/09)

Spring Branch ISD has learned about a t-shirt with an inappropriate graphic image that surfaced in connection with the recent Memorial-Stratford High School football game. This t-shirt was not approved, condoned or sanctioned by SBISD or Memorial High. Several t-shirts were confiscated at the game, and several students have been questioned so far about them. This type of behavior is not acceptable. SBISD and Memorial High officials continue to investigate the situation. Any individuals found to be responsible will be dealt with appropriately.

Thank goodness it was not officially approved by the school.

Mustangs and Spartans have a big rivalry.

Apparently the T shirt is part of the underground stuff the cheerleaders do when they get UP for the game with the Spartans.

35. IF I read the story right ....
Apparently, the T shirt is intended by the Memorial cheerleaders to be a put down of the Spartan cheerleaders. Maybe there is a back story, or maybe it's just a rivalry.

I can tell you that there is a real social and economic rift between those two schools, who share a common boundary line dividing their areas and are in the same school district.

Memorial is very affluent. Stratford is middle to upper middle class.

39. I think knowing how teens today really behave would shock us.
The sexting, for one thing. Girls in their teens taking their own photos, nude or scantily clad, and sending them to boys, for example. Kids having sex parties. My three all graduated high school in the 1990s, and they tell me that today's high schoolers are far more sexually advanced than their group was. I suspect it's the internet, cable tv, and cell phones that revolutionized contact and information flow among teens. They can no longer be physically corralled, because the internet and their cell phones can take them anywhere.

that prohibits some list of words.

And there isn't any actual private body parts visible.

So this one meets some sort of "strict interpretation of the rules" standard.

But...

I think if I owned the T-shirt printing company, I would have said "no boys, not in a million years".

A 6 color screen print would be ridiculously expensive unless you were rattling off about a 1,000 of them. As you say, this is a photoshop design, though a screen printer may still have done the pressing. I quit my job screenprinting when we took on a job shortly after 9/11 that was for shirts with a mushroom cloud and the words "Nuke Afghanistan" on it, and I quit because my boss had no problem doing them. I'm sure there are a ton of screenprinters out there that would have no problems with doing this shirt for money. Sadly. x(

Sorry if that offends football fans. My boyfriends have all been reasonable about their interest in sports... if they were too zealous, they would never have made it to long term relationship status.

I'm athletic, myself. Though, I'm not great at team sports. I just have always hated the stupid sports mentality. My father was an immigrant who had a mild bout of polio as a child, and he was the first in the family to officially dislike sports, yet love athleticism, because rigorous exercise is what allowed him to overcome polio. He hated sports because he couldn't do them well, and got ridiculed.

i asked him, wasnt that odd. not even a game, but practice. what is this. i have a tough enough time getting to sons meets, but i am surely not gonna watch practice. do these people not have a life. are kids extentions of them. dont get it at all

he was telling me the whole footie footie football mentality here in the area

i say, not even like they are gonna do anything with it a year or two from now. just a game. a sport

he told me the football team a whole other world, and only with football team.

i was competitive, olympic competitive swimming. i didnt want parents in meets, let alone practice. was about me. my sport. my doing. nto parents

136. Same in my village
The teams practice at the park at the bottom of my street, starting in late summer. (It breaks my heart to see the Pee Wee players, wider than they are tall with all their gear on, practicing in 90-degree heat and 80% humidity.) And even for the Pee Wee league, the parents bring their folding chairs, drinks, and snacks, and sit on the edge of the field, and "unrelated" folks, like retirees and others, set up their chairs on the outside of the fence. (The retirees "follow" the boys' football careers from Pee Wee through high school.) You can't even get down the street during those evenings.

Oh--and we have teeny weeny cheerleaders as well--for the complete miniature set.

I don't care if people like sports, but the interest in our village's football teams is kind of out of whack. And not a little creepy at times. :scared:

54. Just had a disturbing thought...
Imagine 25 years from now, when the high schoolers involved with this now have kids of their own in high school.

And their kids produce a disturbing T-shirt for the "big game".

What the hell would have to be on THAT T-shirt for their parents to have the same reaction you just had... i.e. "We had some t-shirts with sexual innuendo on them but nothing like THIS"???

I can't even imagine.

An LED display woven into the fabric playing a fake virtual video with real Spartan cheerleaders shown being gang raped by the "Mustangs". Something involving scat or peeing? What? I mean where do you go from here?

What's more, I can easily see much less offensive ways of creating a shirt. How about a cartoon of a tuxedo-clad mustang at a fancy dinner with a cheerleader? Or a scene from earlier the same date with the two at the movies and the mustang trying to sneak his arm around the cheerleader?

It's an excellent school academically, one of the best in the country.
But it's full of rich assholes. She said lots of the people like George Bush, because they know him personally as a nice guy.

She told me what Roger Clemens' kid got for his sixteenth birthday: Two Hummers, one for each foot. His momma also gave the school enough money that they would let him get a parking permit, as tenth graders are not permitted to drive to school.

But if your daddy is Roger Clemens, rules don't matter.

But recently, the announcement about where the Olympics were going to be held served as an excuse for a bout of some overtly offensive sexist crap, as well as some gratuitous pictures. yet it is beyond mere objectification. it is dehumanize and degrade.

what made this so offensive to many

yet so often, we ignore and defend as our guys do it verbally. i am just not seeing a lot of room for squiggling here, on the difference between this, and the way some men talk about women on du.

115. why? more this thread stays up, more i am curious with the contradictions i see here on du
why... is it so offensive? some of our men, even some women regularly speak about women in this manner and we defend as just who the man is. cant help it. his biology. that it isnt degrading to female. it is an appreciation of female. and people that speak against are merely prudes, dont like sex, jealous, fundies.

why is this indefensable yet the guy on du projecting this very attitude are "cool" "manly".

men regularly talk about females being put on this earth to service them. that is all she is doing. that servicing a man is no bigger a deal than working at mcdonalds or being a lawyer.

we talk about how our youth is just exploring their sexuality. they are sexual animals. mere animals. no more than animals.

i am not seeing this picture any more offensive than so many things that are said on du about females, but it has gotten quite a response from the offended.

rape simulating games of young girls emotionally distraught is just fun play, fantasy. this thread is worthless without pictures as our female soldiers are being filmed in shower and then distributed amongst the male soldiers.

it is on du often. and if a woman says anything, we get comments about being prude. how dare we speak out about the service of men. or not see the simple rivalry aspect.

beyond that note

ooooooh, lol, cant wait until you get in the schools. and how great it is, you becoming a teacher. i love it. and no.... not all people from 7th to 12th is fucked up. seems like the kids with a family life make it through much better than those disconnected from family.

127. I did teach 6th grade one year (abroad)
The change in those kids that year was amazing. Oh, a lot of it was good. But it seems as if over Christmas they turned into assholes (mainly toward each other) they formed little cliques and started picking on the "uncool" ones. They never really gave me any discipline problems - but just SO mean to each other (when I wasn't looking.) I made it a point to be the bullies' worst fear.

I think 5th grade is what I'd like to teach - fully (almost) developed brain capacity and no raging hormones yet (for most.) But boy the first time an 11-12 year old girl puts her hand on her hip and rolls her eyes back in her head when you ask her to take her seat, it comes as a shock.

I exaggerate (somewhat) I really loved those kids and still keep up with a few through their parents.

Oh, and another thing - God bless socialized tuition grants for middle-aged college grads who want to change careers and go into teaching.

119. Often, such humor plays on taboo subjects...
such as three-way sex in this case. Indeed, a big part of it is how politically incorrect it is. It's just a part of rivalries. There are always nasty and very cruel jokes about the other school, but it is often deemed to be okay in the social setting of a "rivalry". A lot of the dynamics of a rivalry is to blow things out of proportion, and this is just one way of continuing the tradition of a rivalry. Like I said, the humor is usually very tongue in cheek and isn't taken literally. Part of the art of a rivalry is the over-the-top nature of it.

I just don't understand why you are focusing on just sexism. I don't think the point of the shirt is at all to degrade women in general, it is simply to degrade the women (and men) of the opposing school. The cheerleaders are presented as willing participants in this case who would rather eiffel tower with their macho rivals than with their own (less macho) players is one implication. Of course, it doesn't exactly present the stallions (or whatever they are) in a positive light either... but the whole point of the shirt is to be outragous and not to be taken literally or too seriously.

blacks should just buck up, have a chuckle

cause it isnt like in real life our males dehumanize or degrade female, or think of blacks as subservient.

i guess the question for you is why as a male, you think your position on demeaning women is more relevent than how a female may feel.

You have to remember, these are high school students, and bawdy sex jokes you may find immature are new and fresh to these kids, so they're going to have a laugh. You keep pretending this shirt is meant to dehumanize all women, when the very obvious and specefic intention of the shirt is to dehumanize an opposing school, both the men and women, while at the same time empowering the males at the home school as "macho" and the women as "classy".

I'm sure that these students wouldn't wear this shirt in front of their parents (unless their parents have a unique sense of humor), but it is no doubt a part of the "underground" rivalry.

and a young male is quite able to see and understand the dehumanization of female. the point is, many do not care cause in todays world and culture it is expected of the male. they damn well know exactly what they are doing. do they think it is cute? sure. that is the whole point. that they actually think it is cute, females being service to their dick.

130. Well...
I doubt they think it is "cute" or even are remotely serious about it. In all honesty, the eiffel tower would be seen as "gay" by many uber-macho high school males, so the fact that some of them are able to not take it seriously and perhaps even poke fun at themselves and the whole rivalry is an indication that it is not all about the dehumanization of all females everywhere.

By and large, the young male of today is by far the most "progressive" when it comes to issues of respecting women and perceptions of women. There is still a ways to go in some cases, but the youth of today are on average more aware than ever of gender roles. Of course, that sometimes seems balanced with the fact that young males are probably, on average, the horniest members of society, and their obsession with sexual jokes and humor could come across as sexist I suppose as well.

dont buy it.

doesnt have to be

causes a lot of problems with our youth

teaching our youth to see females as things, both genders, behooves neither gender. and too many of them are not growing out of it. too many of them dont respect the other gender. and too many of them dont know how to connect with another.

137. bullshit
Plenty of schools have rivalries without using explicit misogynist "female as cum bucket" offensive shit like this. I went to a HS that has the oldest high school football rivalry in the nation, and sure there were cartoons made that were meant to be outrageous, but not a one of them used imagery that had anything to do with sex or had a history of imagery that depicts violence against women. What the hell makes you think in the image from the OP that the woman is willing and enjoying it when you can't see her face and the horse she's blowing has a foot on her head??? This is NOT the only image they've used, they have a history of this same "female as cum bucket" disgusting shit, like this one...

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2219866040

The theme they focus on ALWAYS involve sex with women that the women are either clearly NOT enjoying or you can't tell by the image... and in a cartoon that represents a rivalry where the one team is obviously trying to depict the opposing team as losers who are intended to be beaten in the game how the hell could they possibly show the opposing team's cheerleader as enjoying it??? The POINT of imagery concerning a game where there is a winner and a loser is to show the opposing team being "beaten", "stomped", "crushed" and in this school's misogynist imagery "fucked".

143. it doesn't even need to be compared to anything else
It can't be any more obvious... our team is going to beat (fuck) your team in the game showing a picture of our team mascot fucking a cheerleader from your team can't possibly intend to show that cheerleader as enjoying it or the intent of our team is going to beat (fuck) your team doesn't make any sense. OF COURSE SHE ISN'T ENJOYING IT!!! And it doesn't even require that being obvious in the picture because the intent of our team is going to beat (fuck) your team is a given.
