EXCLUSIVE: Gonzales Contradicts His Own Testimony
Recently Released E-Mails Show Attorney General's Involvement in Attorney Firing Talks
By JAN CRAWFORD GREENBURG and ARIANE de VOGUE

April 16, 2007 — - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' assertion that he was not involved in identifying the eight U.S. attorneys who were asked to resign last year is at odds with a recently released internal Department of Justice e-mail, ABC News has learned.

That e-mail said that Gonzales supported firing one federal prosecutor six months before she was asked to leave.

.....................

The e-mail, which came from Gonzales aide Kyle Sampson, appeared to contradict the prepared written testimony Gonzales submitted to Congress over the weekend in advance of his Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday. In his prepared testimony, Gonzales said that during the months that his senior staff was evaluating U.S. attorneys, including Lam, "I did not make the decisions about who should or should not be asked to resign."

But the recently released e-mail from Sampson, dated June 1, 2006, indicated that Gonzales was actively involved in discussions about Lam and had decided to fire her if she did not improve. In the e-mail to other top Justice Department officials, Sampson outlined several steps that Gonzales suggested, culminating in Lam's replacement if she failed to bolster immigration enforcement.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Sandbagged Novation LLC Prosecution

After Alberto Gonzales became Attorney General on February 3, 2005, the investigation of Novation was suppressed even though insider Novation executives came forward to the US Department of Justice with evidence of laundering hospital funds through the publicly traded electronic hospital supply marketplace Neoforma, Inc. that was then controlled by Novation, Volunteer Hospital Association (VHA), and University Health System Consortium (UHC) and is now owned by the electronic hospital supply marketplace GHX, LLC.

In an April 18, 2005 affidavit, Medical Supply Chain founder Samuel Lipari complained about FBI misuse of USA PATRIOT Act surveillance powers. The affidavit described interception of electronic communications and searches by law enforcement officials being used to interfere with and obstruct Lipari’s civil prosecution of the Novation defendants in Medical Supply Chain, Inc., v. Novation LLC et al, US District Court for the W.D. of Missouri No. 05-0210-CV-W-ODS>>>

>>Samuel Lipari again complained on October 12, 2006 in the US Court of Appeals for the Eight Circuit in St. Louis, Missouri that US District Attorney Bradley J. Schlozman failed to investigate evidence of public corruption brought to his office and permitted obstruction of justice to continue despite the injuries to Samuel Lipari, his family and associates.

On January 16, 2007 Attorney General Gonzales responded to criticism of his misuse of the USA PATRIOT Act by announcing John Wood would be taking Bradley Schlozman's place in Kansas City two days before he gave his previous testimony to Congress.

On March 22, 2007, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales met in St. Louis with U.S. Attorneys Catherine L. Hanaway and Bradley J. Schlozman of Missouri districts to conduct an undisclosed discussion related to the conduct of US Attorney Bradley J. Schlozman.

Disappointed with the continuing US Department of Justice cover up, on April 9, 2007 Samuel Lipari publicly disclosed Medical Supply discovery revealing the US Attorneys targeted by Karl Rove and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales that resulted in Todd Graves being replaced by Bradley J. Schlozman a year earlier. John Wood was finally sworn in as the US Attorney for the Western District of Missouri on April 11, 2007.

notified of this before the hearings. (Don't you imagine that they already know, though?)

This story has completely been lost and untold in the American Press

Hopefully someone will send this story to the Senate Judiciary Committee
before the hearings.

SEND THIS TO LEAHY, WAXMAN, CONYERS before Gonzales testifies tomorrow.

US Attorney General's office stalled investigation of Novation, LLC's hospital supply kickback practices. Alberto Gonzales was a senior partner in the law firm representing Novation, LLC.

3. This one's easy. The decision to fire her was not made, because she
was given a chance to improve. Gonzo is in the clear on this one, I hate to say.

12. People stop reading when it suits them.
I'd say they stopped right before the "if".

And while it could be argued he was instrumental in discussions that led to firing Lam, that's one, not plural. The best you get is that Gonzales was sloppy in his speech.

13. NPR has a good timeline re Carol Lam
It is interesting, imo, when I look at what was happening on or around the date of the e-mail, June 1, 2006:

May 12, 2006: FBI agents search the home and office of former CIA Executive Director Kyle Foggo, best friend of alleged Cunningham co-conspirator Brent Wilkes.

May 31, 2006: Attorney General's Chief of Staff Kyle Sampson e-mails Associate Attorney General Bill Mercer asking, "Has ODAG ever called Carol Lam and woodshedded her re immigration enforcement? Has anyone?"

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=8975431

I am sure the timing of the e-mail being sent within weeks of the offices of Foggo is just coincidental. :sarcasm:

14. Dems should start pushing to restrict Presidential pardons.
Edited on Mon Apr-16-07 07:24 PM by Marr
Push to make it so the President cannot pardon anyone in his own Administration, and cannot issue a pardon for *anyone* for at least 5 years after conviction.

Make the Republican Party- and Bush in particular- argue for the right to pardon criminals, even as people in his Administration are being convicted in the court of public opinion.

15. Wait--Gonzo perjured himself in his WRITTEN testimony?
Is that correct? I'm having trouble believing it.

If that's the case, this guy is the DUMBEST fellow in our hemisphere. He couldn't even write a tactful statement that didn't perjure himself? What, he just wasn't expecting Sampson's email would get noticed by a network news organization? Gonzo had to know that that email message was in the group being released on Friday. And he filed the prepared remarks with Congress anyway?

Given what almost everyone has been told, there is nothing wrong in the land of BushCo Attorneys. So few are aware something is going on.
