“It was like a flea market gone crazy,” says Scott Siewert, divisional vice president of sales for USMotivation, an incentive marketing company that helped Diebold Inc. organize its Masters Circle program held in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, last summer.
The event Siewert is speaking of was a customized artisan market just for the 165 trip attendees, who represented “the best of the best” at Diebold. Everyone was given 25 Diebold Dollars that allowed them to sample the wares of local merchants selling ceramics, blown glass, jewelry, silver, handmade rugs and other items. “The artisans knew everyone had to spend their Diebold Dollars at the event, so they got into a spirited competition to hawk their wares,” Siewert says.
The “funny money” shopping spree wasn’t the only giveaway that trip winners received. Another wildly popular activity, according to Siewert, was a Biker Beach Bash at Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Cantina. The guests, all outfitted in logoed biker gear they received the night before, took a walk on the wild side at the world-renowned hot spot, rented out for the occasion. Guests posed on a Harley, relived their week through a highlights video and had the chance to emblazon their biceps with fake tattoos. Former Van Halen lead singer Hagar provided the hard-driving music, and “Attendees didn’t want to leave,” Siewert says. “They stayed in the bar long after the event ended.” Fortunately, all party-goers were able to relive the experience for months afterward with an autographed CD of Hagar’s top hits.
Other event gifts included a four-color pre-trip handbook and customized luggage tags that served as airport identifiers. “At check-in everyone received a welcome food basket and a logoed beach bag,” says Siewert. “The bags were died in shades of blue and white to tie in to the event’s sea and sky color scheme.”
The final event was an awards banquet featuring Masters Circle trophies for the winners. Diebold gave out 150 elegant brass-on-wood trophies engraved with the participant’s names. “These were suitable for executive office display,” Siewert says, “and that made them very popular.”
