17. So am I the only person on this site who hatess stupid nicknames for political figures?
All they indicate to me is a diminishing sense of political decorum. I've commented on this topic a number of times, but I really think such things are counterproductive. Political progress and change can't come about if you completely alienate those you oppose. It will simply make them more resistant to your ideas.

19. I'm in your camp.

I think that Cheney is despicable. His actions are all I need to show his quality. I don't need a nickname to further explain his being a complete disaster.

23. Exactly.
And the last thing American political culture needs is to be degraded further into the realm of name calling over action and ideas.

24. Nicknames can be a positive or a negative....
Some convey a sense of national pride (examples: The Rail Splitter, Roughrider, Give 'em Hell Harry). Others stand as a testimony to criminal, negligent or incompetent behavior (Tricky Dick, *, Crashcart). I think that personalizing the politician makes them easier to relate to them.

26. In a positive sense, I agree...
Giving a politician you admire a nickname, for example calling bill Clinton "Big Dawg" is a way to make oneself and perhaps a group of supporters relate better to the politician.

But in the sense I'm speaking of, where the nickname is a mere insult, it reduces politics to a somewhat immature mentality. It's not meant to personalize the politician or make them more relatable, it's meant to just smear them. I prefer to maintain a level of maturity and decorum when discussing politics, because I consider politics to be an incredibly important aspect of life. In a case like Cheney or the bush administration, nicknames are entirely unneccessary. You can paint a much uglier picture and convey the issues much more effectively to those who might not be on the same page as you, in my opinion, if maturity and decorum are maintained.

25. Political nicknames are excellent barometers of and outlets for rage
Healthy, angry people often resort to humor as an outlet.

People who are disturbed by them may well be in fear of the anger they represent ... which
is considerable.

27. There's no arguing that they represent anger.
I'm just of the belief that it's necessary to temper that anger when discussing politics so as to more effectively convey the issues and ideas that are important.

33. "Tempering" anger generally means suppressing it
That doesn't bring about dialog and it enforces depression and a feeling of helplessness.
Also, what I think about what other people do is immaterial. So long as they aren't hurting
someone, they should say and do whatever they like. I have enough trouble figuring out how
to sort my sock drawer, never mind trying to determine how other people should speak and think.

34. In a political discussion, certainly anger and desire should fuel debate.
I think most desire for political change (especially on the left) comes from a sense of anger at a percieved injustice. I definitely don't think it should be suppressed. When I say that it should be tempered, I mean that it should be controlled. Anger can cloud judgment and rationality and as a result hurt the argument that is being made. To me, petty namecalling is a sign that a person's judgment and rationality are clouded. I am much more likely to acknowledge "Dick Cheney is a war profiteer" as a legitimate claim than for example, "Crashcart McBuckshot is a war profiteer," simply because of the impression of rationality and mature thought that is given by the former.

37. "Petty" namecalling is humor
Much of it far more trenchant and incisive than the most ponderous declarative sentence.

Personally, I prefer calling these monsters "Crashcart" and "Bubble Boy" to having to use
their names. It relieves stress. It's also funny as hell. Personally, I think to suggest otherwise seems a bit stuffy and silly.
