Stand With ACORN Petition Launched

I've had better weeks during my years with ACORN.

Most of you have heard about the latest round of attacks being orchestrated against us by a pair of actors and their friends at purported "news" organizations on cable TV and the Internet.

The behavior of some ACORN employees has been completely indefensible, but make no mistake -- the resulting sideshow is being fueled by the Right to distract all of us from the truth. And the truth is this: ACORN's work is invaluable. We make sure the have-nots and have-lesses get some say and some political power in this country -- and the people protecting the status quo have never been a big fan of that.

I'm disappointed that the efforts of a cynical, ill-intentioned group have yielded even a single bit of fodder for the ongoing, multi-year attack on ACORN. But ACORN takes the public's trust seriously and is taking dramatic steps such as an immediate in-service training for all front-line workers and an independent review of our service programs to ensure that trust is, and will always be, well founded.

But the people working so hard to push these attacks -- Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Fox "News", etc. -- don't care about ACORN's service delivery, protecting your tax dollars or upholding the law. And they certainly don't care about the low- and moderate-income families and families of color that make up ACORN's membership and constituency.

Petition here: http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/2749/t/4433/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=676

So when they raise a ruckus about undercover tapes, when they harp night and day on the results of a premeditated and manipulative effort to shut ACORN down, you know it's not because they're looking out for you. It's because they want to derail the efforts of one of the strongest advocates this country has for low- and moderate-income people.

But suddenly these people and the politicians who listen to them -- who don't have the time of day for people like you and me -- suddenly can't stop talking about ACORN. And you can bet they're not talking about the work that has made a difference in the lives of working families and communities of color across the nation. Fair? Balanced? Hardly.

Despite recent news, and despite what talking heads are so thrilled to repeat -- there's a great deal more to ACORN than what the Becks, Limbaughs, and Bachmanns of the world would have you believe. While it may be politically expedient to grab a seat on the bandwagon with the pundits and politicians wagging their fingers at the misdeeds of a handful of ACORN employees, the facts remain the same.

The vast majority of ACORN employees roll up their sleeves day-in and day-out, working long hours on behalf of the low- and moderate- income people in this country. They do good work -- most of it work that the government can't, or simply won't, do.

And that's why we need you to contact your members of Congress and ask that they stand with ACORN now. Join with us.

There are a lot of good reasons to continue to stand firm with ACORN. Here are just a few:

* ACORN has helped nearly 50,000 homeowners access foreclosure prevention services since the start of our nation's foreclosure crisis;

* ACORN played an integral role in the passage of 6 statewide minimum wage increases in Florida, Ohio, Missouri, Colorado, Arizona, and California and the City of San Francisco -- increases that set the stage for the national increase in 2007; all told over $2 billion put directly in the pocket of low-wage workers.

* ACORN fought hard against predatory lending for a decade, winning legislation in Massachusetts, New Mexico, California, New York and New Jersey, and changes in the behavior of some corporations that led to over $6 billion of equity staying in the hands of working families.

You and I know this isn't work that Big Business, Big Media, or Big Politics are particularly fond of. But that's not why ACORN exists. ACORN exists to make a difference in the lives of millions of Americans -- often poor, often black or brown, often immigrants -- and to make sure that all of us have a seat at the table and a voice in the voting booth.

And you can bet that's what this is REALLY about.

Stand with ACORN. And contact your member of Congress now to ask that they do the same.

26. It's time for the democratic party to stop outsourcing
voter-outreach, voter registration . The RNC does this sort of thing in-house, and though really closely affiliated groups, and we need to start doing the same.

By farming it out, we have stayed identified with groups like ACORN, but have no real control over them, so when things like this happen, we are painted with that same broad brush.

I have no doubt that this was a sting operation, but they ended up being sting-able.. I feel for the honest people in the organization, but they need to disband, and re-organize..with a new name, a new mission, and new people at the top, and throughout the group.

32. You are posting gross misinformation.
ACORN does not have a contract with the Democratic party to register voters. ACORN's mission has been to register voters in neighborhoods where people ordinarily do not venture to register them. Their mission is to get people who, statistically, do not participate in the democratic process and they will register any voter no matter what their political affiliation.

They cannot disband. It would destroy one of the most effective community organizations that took decades to build. Thank you for promoting Rush's, Fox News, and obscenely well-funded right wing organization's agenda. That is, destroying this organization.

35. You said that the Democratic Party outsources to ACORN.
That is a lie. ACORN's mission has been to register voters independent of any party. The fact that their target demographic overwhelmingly registers as Democrats is precisely why the right wing has been attacking them for years.

You have the choice to wear the hair shirt of their flaws or you can celebrate their successes. You have the choice to accept Fox New's characterization or you can say reject it and do something about it.

Or you can passively say, "Whatever," and watch while they take down every single institution that fights for the least of us.

And none of the Republican attempts to find any wrongdoing on their part in that effort came to anything at all. Oh, and ACORN is nonpartisan. They don't work for the Democratic Party.

70. Could you provide a list of who voted on this issue?
I'd like to have a laugh at the guys who take money from some of the most corrupt corporations in the world as they pretend to be 'outraged' over a few employees, some of whom may even have been plants, in an organization that has done so much good.

I'd like to laugh at the same guys who have yet to hold anyone responsible for the collapse of this country's economy, you know, the ones who sold 'toxic assets' knowing full well they were worthless? Any sign of any investigations of those guys?

How about the guys who violated their Oaths when they broke the laws of this country and became war criminals?

The list is long of issues that Congress ought to be interested in investigating and have had years to do so, but this little fiasco, orchestrated by a couple of actors backed by the usual righwing crazies who cannot stand having a Democrat, and a black one at that, in the WH, got the attention of Congress overnight.

I'm not going to bother googling who in Congress started this witchhunt because it's obvious, and the usual cowardly suspects on the Dem side who go along.

So, why don't YOU provide the list since it is keeping you from supporting Acorn?

I will be supporting them and I will send around the petition to everyone I know.

78. The Witchhunt was led by
Republicans, as expected, and joined by spineless Democrats, no surprise, who think they are off the political hook now in terms of being associated with the smear campaign which will not let up until after the 2012 election.

I AM laughing as it is as I expected, like so many other politically motivated votes where the Democrats mistakenly believe they are now safe from criticism. I'm laughing because we were told that 'more democrats' was all we needed to 'get things done'.

The margin is NO surprise. Have YOU learned nothing from the past? What was the margin of votes for the Iraq War? The Patriot Act? How about Bush's SC nominees and cabinet members? If you think because of this, it means anything other than business as usual, even WITH a majority, I don't think the word 'stupid' applies to me. More change we can believe in.

And, as expected, this was not enough for the bullies. They want MORE as bullies who are not confronted always do:

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/18/republican-leader-seeks-more-curbs-on-acorn-funds/

Despite their victory this week on cutting off federal funds to the community organization Acorn, House Republicans are not about to let the matter go.

Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the Republican leader, on Friday demanded that Speaker Nancy Pelosi quickly hold a vote on a bill devoted solely to cutting off any future federal money to the liberal activist group.

His push comes because Republicans on Thursday added the Acorn funding ban to a college loan measure that has a long way to go in Congress – and which many Republicans oppose to boot. So the funding restriction included in that bill is not going to become law anytime soon.

And if they get THAT, and spineless Dems go along, as they will, even MORE will be demanded. When the day comes that we have REAL Democrats who understand that no matter how they cave in to the demands of bullies, they will still be attacked, as they were after the Iraq War vote. Did Repulbicans call them 'Patriotic'? While it IS laughable, it is a sad state of affairs and something needs to be done about it, which does not, apparently, include electing 'more Democrats'.

What is amusing is that anyone would believe that this 'margin' actually means anything other than 'Republican withhunt' and 'Democrats cave in'.

I refuse to overlook the egregious actions of ACORN employees until the organization gets its house in order and takes steps to assure that crap like this never happens again.

When the story first broke, Bertha Lewis's initial response was to threaten legal action against the people who exposed the employees and any media outlets that publicised the tapes. That's not leadership; that's just a chickenshit intimidation tactic.

54. You've careened off course already congrat'z, as a practical operational matter...
word should have gone out were to have done so there'd be nothing today for your Rush to grab onto that's just smart not stupid; so now by the pricking of my thumbs comes some cheerleaders cheer-leading what again? The furtherance of untimely, non-operational overview able to keep those very wolves off your doorstep?

Forget your brother being heavy for a moment if you are able, and tell him instead to be wary and far more careful; this world is much more serious than stupid is able to accommodate how's those wars going? You applying the same bent logic? Have they stopped yet? Or is the lift heavier than you thought it would be? Ever wonder why that's the case? Of course you don't, you feel your thoughts are sacrosanct, how precious you must be not merely luminous

It is sometimes a task to go find anywhere else and see what are self-thought self-claimed to be 'smart people' so transfixed on such dumb things than here at DU but this is a perfect example of hysterical myopia...the first mention is in the OP itself:

"* ACORN has helped nearly 50,000 homeowners access foreclosure prevention services since the start of our nation's foreclosure crisis"

If you are unable to read inside that simple passage and pull from it the very importance as to why any operational interface with prospective buyers should have been made more straight-forward and founded upon good business (if there is such a thing anymore) then you have imo completely missed the point; they've been trying to wedge ACORN into that mix for years & years & now not with mine but your's they are doing so - you haven't seen this firestorm approaching over ACORN till *this* very specific little moment in time?

:wow: :spray:      yeah riiiiight, keep up that really swell work you're doing...

...

...

...

Plenty of people have been warning of things to come and now they're here, but it's even harder to speak with people such as yourself so much like concrete: all mixed up and permanently set little able to move in either direction without the assistance of a jackhammer

43. ACORN was among the first to warn about predatory lending,
not among the first to exploit it.

I'm beginning to think that most posters to DU only know ACORN from Faux Newz.

56. You've said you were a realtor, I did I expected more...
Realtors can be some of the slipperiest people out there, you shouldn't have to waste your precision trying to turn that perception around but it's your's to do so. We aren't looking so much into ACORN's good works, just the ways in which those good works have been compromised over, and let's face it: a property deal - real estate, m-o-n-e-y, mortgage underwriting, 'PA-per'; please don't tell me that you advocate instead an even more baseless, rootless paper well beyond A-B-C into X-Y-Z no-down no-job no-cares we-don't-need-no-stinking-badges-so-who-needs-paper-paper come on people, ACORN pointed out predatory lending practices? Well...

Lots of people wrap themselves in the flag that don't make them patriotic they just think it does but I'll leave you with this believe or don't, and they're always saying something but...

They say that the paths (note plural) to the underworld are deep, wide, and various. But that the path (note singular) to Nirvana is narrow and inclined

I think that what they are suggesting is that one's some, oft, or many contributions to a better world can all be attenuated away with but one mis-step; ACORN is subject to that we all are, they should have known it we all should. What left you with the impression that even a handful of people out of thousands could get away with running a *hammer hammer hammer high pressure get that commission at all cost* boiler room of suspect activity cause I make realtors dance on the fucking dime and justify their black ops SUV's; or even a handful/less than a handful, or are we to give only certain people a pass?

The greater pity for me is that so many DUer's give so much cover to activity the other side is able to climb up on top off, the shove down 'the lefts' throat

61. Not even a commercial realtor? Hm, well either way, that is what is going down here...
The opinions upon spurious business practices or for that matter straight up & down ones. And if you've had to deal with them in today's business climate then you know - businesses continue to close everyday black-white-red-yellow-brown with clean books good products and intentions they just can't make it, few things are carved in stone any longer especially going in, and *don't* leave your ass hanging out round town for someone to come along and take a little snip out of it - owie!

Unless of course that is your business who am I to suggest otherwise

46. Do you get that bridgit?
Will you reject the propaganda and understand? Will you put this fact into your brain? ACORN warned against predatory lending. They were one of the first. Why? Because their mission is to help people; not to make a profit and mire them in unmanageable debt.

58. Put this into *your* brain...
If you think that by handing Shawn Hannity a platform such as this, and that in that process ACORN will just/simply be able to keep on sauntering down the road handing out "Howdy Doody!"(s) and front door keys you're too simple...this is dangerous hair-trigger world and you're too much like Pollyanna for a casual game of Mahjong

Even if it's really ACORN itself with a changed name. I have nothing against ACORN... Just tired of it being a RW punching bag/talking point.
