My letter to Congressman Wilson.
Edited on Thu Sep-10-09 03:31 AM by Are_grits_groceries
Congressman Wilson,

I do not even know where to begin in expressing my disgust at your incomprehensible and disrespectful behavior during President Obama’s speech. You have disgraced yourself, the people of the state of South Carolina, and the office to which you were elected. Suffice it to say that was the single most appalling act I have ever witnessed during a Presidential address.

I would strongly suggest that you look up the word “respect,” and give some thought to its meaning. My parents raised me to respect people. I was to show common courtesy to those I met, and that was the very least I should do.

You said that you let your emotions get the better of you. That behavior might be expected from a 5 year old, but not an adult. It is not an acceptable explanation nor is it the basis for a true apology.

To say that I didn’t agree with President George W. Bush when he was in office would be an understatement. However, I would no more have thought of calling him a liar in the middle of a speech than I would have thought of slapping my mother.

The President of the United States deserves the utmost respect. You might disagree with him, but there are civil ways to express your position. Congressman Wilson, you managed to use the lowest form of verbal behavior which was one step above throwing a rock.

I am sure that you will hear from some people who approve of your actions. I wouldn’t take much comfort from knowing I was a hero to the ill-mannered, unthinking, and uninformed. That is a parade I would not want to lead.

I have tried to express my displeasure about your actions in a civil manner that shows respect for the office you hold. If I was to express myself on the level that you have set, I would simply have asked, “Were you raised in a barn?”

Sincerely,

I apologize to one and all for Congressman Wilson's actions.

1. Wilson is one of those people who would never be smart enough to grab all the power
no matter how badly he would want it. He is, however, one of those people who would be happy to throw the first stone that starts the riot on behalf of another power grabber. He's willing to do the dirty work. A lieutenant, a hitman, a fixer....and a consummate asshole. Exactly why Rs lost and their elected officials are all like him...look at Boehner, Graham, McCain, McConnell, Gohmert, Vickers, Ensign, and on and on. Buffoonish bullies and thugs.

2. You may want to open the letter on a softer tone...
I'm not saying I disagree with what you are saying, I'm just saying that such a harsh opening may prevent the congresman to read to the end of the letter.

If I may suggest something, why don't you start by a few sincere words about the respect you have for the institution of congress and/ or senate, how you feel that the rules of decorum set for these institutions have set a high moral tone for the country? After that, you can lead to your reproach to him with "You will understand that the lack of decorum you displayed has shocked me. I have no words to express etc..."

All this is merely a suggestion - so please regards it as such, not as a reproach to you. Standing up for civility in debate is a virtue. I commend you for making the effort.

Betty

4. Thanks!
That was my softer opening, but I'll work on it.

8. Your opening is fine as it is
Don't go soft now, Wilson deserves harsher criticism than what you have delivered in your letter.

9. Not yet.
I'm trying to think of a softer opening. I'm having trouble getting past "You asshole!"

I appreciate the thought about signing on to my letter. In this case, more might end up being less. He needs to hear from people who live in SC. He might blow my letter off because I don't live in his district, but I am trying to think of a way to subtly remind him that I can volunteer my time and money to his opponent. I am near enough.

People should keep his site down with emailing. However, there will be the inevitable kneejerk response to "outside agitators." The people of SC have to make it clear that it isn't just people from out of state who are unhappy. He will run on a "Don't let outsiders run me out of office" message. It's his only option.

7. I'm from South Carolina
and I am ashamed to admit it anymore.

These people have made me ashamed of my state.

Can I sign your letter too?

PS - it could be stronger.

10. I am using the old Charlestonian trick of
"politing him to death." They can so nicely slice and dice you up in so many ways. You will fall apart in pieces before you know what hit.

That jackass is used to the "hollering" political method. I am trying to get through with a different tactic. He'll probably need a translator to understand.

I am really telling him he is a pinheaded twit with the manners of a toad, and he acts as if he was a feral child who raised himself under a bridge. He learned English from what he heard people shouting out of pickup trucks, and he learned to read from the sides of empty beer cans. I would say his reasoning skills must have stopped during the speech, but I'm not sure they ever started at all.

I don't mind people signing my letter, but I think it would be better if he gets a lot of them from everybody in the state. He needs to be flooded. I am sending this by snail mail that has to be signed for. That may help make a point.
I'm not sure they are used to envelopes with stamps.
