Between the health care debate and Obama's presentation to public school children on Sept. 8, the right-wingnuts are foaming at the mouth and ready to grab to their guns and home-school their kids. They'd be willing to raise their kids to be willfully ignorant, like themselves. Yeah, what a great way to prepare a child for the world.
Anyway, this is an example of what I mean. This is from an online conversation about the Sept. 8 presentation:
Her: It's not the listening to him speak that is the issue, it's the afterward that he wants the teachers to cram down their throats that HIS way is the ONLY way. That is not what America is about. He can have his say just like everyone else, but he does not have permission to try to force his beliefs on my kid. My kid is my mine to corrupt as I choose.Me: Uh. Would you mind pointing out where in the literature for this event it says the Obama wants to "cram down their throats that HIS way is the ONLY way"?
I'm not seeing it:
http://www.docstoc.com/docs/10582301/President-Obama%E2%80%99s-Address-to-Students-Across-America-September-8-2009Her: My son is not going to help the president pass gov't run health care or be influenced to think that is it the best thing since sliced bread. He can't even vote. If the president and congress don't have to take the health care plan, I don't want it either. CHECK it OUT>>>WHAT IS THE PRESIDENT ASKING ME TO DO? is from your little link there. The president doesn't get to ask my underage kid to do anything without going thru me.Me: You didn't answer the question. Instead, you diverted into some rant about the healthcare debate, which is not part of the agenda of the President's speech. I'm asking you seriously and in a calm manner:
Where in there does it state that Obama is pushing any particular viewpoint or opinion other than encouraging kids to stay in school, be successful in school, and engage in thought to pose questions of things presented to them? Her: My son is not going to help the president pass gov't run health care or be influenced to think that is it the best thing since sliced bread. He can't even vote. If the president and congress don't have to take the health care plan, I don't want it either. CHECK it OUT>>>WHAT IS THE PRESIDENT ASKING ME TO DO? is from your little link there. The president doesn't get to ask my underage kid to do anything without going thru me. Just as I am sure you wouldn't want me talking to your kids about how stupid gov't run health care is. They can't even balance the budget in DC. And I don't care Rep or Dem, they have all contributed to it. I sure don't want them deciding about my health.Me:Again, you have diverted into ranting about healthcare which, again, is not part of the agenda of the President's address to kids. Can we leave that part out of the discussion? I get it that you'd rather have greedy insurance companies that ration healthcare, deny healthcare, and make a profit doing so. That's your right to your own opinion but it has nothing to do with the event on Sept. 8.
So, since you can't point out in the document where it mentions that, how about addressing your real concerns? Is that you're afraid of your children learning how to think and ask questions of authority? That they'll learn to ask questions of what is being said to them or asked of them? Personally, I think that's an awesome thing to get kids to do. Kids shouldn't just accept what's offered to them at face value.
