#1. Venezuelan Jews blame President Hugo Chavez's incendiary rhetoric against Israel for last week's attack on one of the more prominent synagogues in Caracas. A group of men broke in, spray-painted anti-Semitic messages on walls and damaged the Torah and other religious artifacts.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=100393143&ft=1&f=1001No Chavez supporters were involved in this crime. It was an inside job:
REUTERS - Seven Venezuelan police agents and four civilians have been arrested in connection with an attack on a synagogue that sparked international condemnation, investigators said on Sunday.
President Hugo Chavez, whom Jewish groups accuse of encouraging anti-Semitism, referred to the arrests and said the attack was led by a police officer who had worked closely with the rabbi at the synagogue.
"What a coincidence, the gang leader is a metropolitan police officer who for the last four years was the personal bodyguard of the synagogue's rabbi," he said during an interview with television station Venevision on Sunday.

CARACAS -(Dow Jones)- A group from a political party aligned with President Hugo Chavez Monday stormed the headquarters of Globovision, a news network that is facing a mounting offensive by the government that could shut it down.
About 35 people riding motorcycles and wearing flags from Union Patriotica Venezolana (UPV), a political party that supports Chavez, entered the network's headquarters threatening personnel with guns and throwing tear gas, Globovision workers said in interviews broadcast by the news channel.
Images from security cameras transmitted by Globovision showed the men surrounding the channel in their motorcycles, wearing UPV flags on their backs and throwing devices that appeared to be tear gas.

An arrest was made within 24 hours. Blaming Chavez for this is like blaming Obama for PETA actions.
#3. Hugo Chavez's supporters attack Manuel Rosales
YouTube: Manuel Rosales, a high profile opposition leader holds a press conference to announce that if he is assassinated, it is on Hugo Chavez's orders.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjwgQ1QxdY8There is
no attack on Rosales in this video and Mr. Rosales is alive and well in Peru, where he is a fugitive wanted by Interpol. Mr. Rosales was a backer of the regime preceding Chavez; he founded the political party Nuevo Tiemp which is allied with and funded by the hard American right, and he participated in the 2002 coup to unseat Chavez.
#4. Bishop recounts how Chavez supporters occupied Archdiocese of Caracas chancery
Caracas, Venezuela, Feb 28, 2008 / 04:20 pm (CNA).- In statements to the Catholic News Agency, Auxiliary Bishop Jesus Gonzalez de Zarate of Caracas recounted how a group of young people led by a well-known Chavez activist, occupied the archdiocesan chancery on Wednesday in order to get the attention of the media and demand that the TV station Globovision be shut down.
According to the bishop, “shortly before 9am, a group of young people who identified themselves as students stormed into the chancery and went into all of the offices, saying they were going to peacefully occupy the chancery and warning employees to leave.”

#5. The hit pieces take two forms. One form fingers Chavez ("strongman friend of Fidel and supporter of terrorists") directly, like this one:
Defector: Chavez gave $1 million to al-Qaida

Recent high-level Venezuelan military defectors say President Hugo Chavez gave $1 million to al-Qaida shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the United States.
http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=30350There is zero evidence linking Chavez to bin Laden, obviously. This is from World Nut Daily but the material itself is very similar to what is regularly run by AP, NYTs, Waho. (Sadly.)
#6. The other typical hit piece frames any crime in Venezuela as the work of "Chavez supporters". Today's story:
Photos showed apparent Chavez supporters descending on the group, then shoving, kicking and beating them with sticks. The journalists, some bloodied in the confrontation, later reported the attackers shouted slogans in support of Chavez's government.http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/2009/08/14/world/AP-LT-Venezuela-Journalists-Beaten.html?_r=1This latest bit of astroturf
is not accompanied by photos or any other indication of who the perps might be except those darn "Chavez supporters". When the perps are arrested and charged, the update will not also be astroturfed.
Oh, and this story spins an education bill that was passed successfully, guaranteeing quality public education for the nation's kids which the opposition fought tooth and nail.
#7. The strategy of seeding the idea that Chavez supporters are violent is at least as old as the 2002 coup when privately owned opposition media claimed that "Chavez supporters" shot and killed two protesters, going to the length of airing doctored video of the shooting. The claim was shown to be false by a team of Irish documentarians who had original, unedited video showing these deaths were caused by opposition snipers. The Irish crew eventually released their video in "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" which included an extended interview with a television producer who quit his job in protest over the misinformation being broadcast by RCTV during the coup.
#8. The very best (most outrageous, factless and funny) hit pieces are written by Simon Romero (NYTs), Tyler Bridges (Miami Herald/ McClatchy), and Juan Forero (WaHo). So, if you like taking apart propaganda, watch for those names.
In the mean time, watch out for those Chavez supporters and hide your kittehs.
