The party has been reduced to the dregs, the devils the leadership made the deals with in order to gain all three branches of government.

5. Some republicans are simply ashamed...

the few I've spoken with are appalled and embarrassed at the pile of stupidity,
narrowmindedness, intoloerance and hate that the republican party has become.
Essentially, they are laying low... they are hiding... they want nothing to do with it.

Why they are still republicans is the mystery. Are they stubborn or just lazy?

6. I think all the items you listed can be traced back to fear.

They fear change. They fear those who are different than they are. They fear what life might be like when they aren't at the top of the food chain. They fear that someone might get something they think that person doesn't deserve. They fear that they will not be able to adapt to the changes of the world. I would be mean & nasty too, if I lived with that much fear.
