Woman sets self on fire, walks around Miami mall
MIAMI (AP) - A woman set herself on fire at a Miami mall Thursday, then walked around engulfed in flames as shocked shoppers watched, authorities said.

Two men and a woman who tried to help her were hurt, but not badly.

The 43-year-old woman, whose name was not released, doused herself with a flammable liquid at the Mall of the Americas, said Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman Arnold Piedrahita. She had third-degree burns over 75 percent of her body and was found conscious in a parking lot. Authorities do not know why she set herself on fire.

-----

"This woman is just walking like this, super slow, completely on fire," Morales said, his arms stretched out at his side to show what the woman looked like as she walked out of the store. "You couldn't see nothing but fire."

Morales said witnesses used two fire extinguishers on the woman, who was on fire about two-and-a-half minutes. All of her clothes except her underwear disappeared into ashes.

After the fire was out, Morales said, the woman walked out of the mall and into the parking lot.

OMG! I feel sorry for the people in the mall who had to watch this and of course for this woman. I did read or hear she has mental problems.

Gruesome story.

Thank goodness nobody else was hurt.

Hopefully she recovers and gets the help she needs.

7. How sad - she has a 4 year old daughter & and older daughter
The woman's husband said she had been to Jackson Memorial Hospital three times recently for psychiatric help and has a history of mental problems, according to Miami Herald news partner WFOR-CBS 4.

Her daughter works at the Mall of Americas boutique where the woman set herself on fire, her husband said.

They also have a 4-year-old daughter.

3. OMG that's horrible!
I can't imagine the excruciating pain of 3rd degree burns over 75% of your body.

6. I cant believe
I cant believe that she was walking around, conscious, afterwards!

I also really feel for the witnesses - unless you have personally witnessed something traumatic you cannot understand the very real PTSD that may occur.

4. recent cases of self-immolation
seems to be a Florida connection, unsurprisingly...

• In June, a man Brandon, Fla., tried to kill himself by dousing himself with gasoline and then lighting himself on fire. The 67-year old-man was taken to a Tampa hospital for treatment. He survived.

• In February, a WalMart employee in Chicago set himself on fire outside the store where he worked. Larry Graziano, 58, used lighter fluid. Bystanders tried to help, but Graziano fought them off. He died of his injuries.

• In 2004, a 34-year-old Pahokee (FL) man was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital after he slashed his wife with a knife and then set himself on fire.

11. That is my biggest fear
When I was a kid and there was a show about fire I had nightmares. Even Lassie when there was a forest fire though I lived in the city.

That is definitely not a way I'd want to go.

12. I don't think she was getting the best mental health treatment
if she was out again and did this.

I wonder if her health insurance forced her out of the hospital.

13. Yeah I was wondering myself if health insurance could be a reason
And also we now have hospitals who toss the mentally ill out on the street or only want to do on outpatient basis.

14. From time to time, I've had to fight down the impulse to set my self on fire
Especially when I see Fox News on the screen at my doctor's office, local delicatessen and carwash place.

18. Too soon..
...I know, but I am slightly demented

Build a man a fire and he will be warm all night
Set a man on fire and he will warm the rest of his life

Sorry....but not too sorry
