The Republicans have a point about John Holdren's "Nazi" eugenics book
John Holdren co-authored a book, Ecoscience, with Paul R. Ehrlich in the 1970s. Ehrlich is a complete lunatic who DID advocate compulsory birth regulation etc. He has been part of FAIR, which the mainstream SPLC calls a "hate group". Ehrlich is a complete nut and crank.

This kind of stuff was very popular among American liberals up until World War II.

Holdren distanced himself from these opinions during his confirmation hearings.

The right wing do not sound like cranks saying this. Ehrlich was with FAIR until 2003. Which received money from the Pioneer Fund.

How can it be a surprise questions would arise about this? I'm scared of Ehrlich, and thus have questions about Holdren's association with Ehrlich, so I can imagine what the conservatives think.

Holdren did this over thirty years ago, and distanced himself during his confirmation hearings, but it should have come as no surprise he would be criticized for this. I criticize him for this. But it was long ago and he no longer has those views so I think he's fine for the job. Ehrlich is still a wacko though.
