Water Wasters

The Bee is launching a community reporting project to find Sacramento's water wasters and we need your help. Look for improper watering - such as sprinklers going after 10 a.m. and before 6 p.m. - particularly when the water flows onto nearby pavement. Take a digital picture - we took ours with a cellphone and you can too - and upload here. Include a brief description of the date and time the photo was taken and where it was taken, including street address and nearest cross street.

Come back Sunday (Aug. 8) for a story about the city's biggest water wasters.

The Sacramento Bee has also been targeting State workers and union's lately. I find their tactics freeper like.

1. No, because jackasses who don't conserve should be exposed.
While 95% of citizens try to be mindful when water shortages come, there are always those jackasses who must keep their yard green.

2. Nope. Water is necessary for life. People who treat it like a personal plaything threaten life.

All too soon, all people will understand how precious a COMMUNITY resource water is.

edited to add: We are in favor of actions to stop people who waste another essential-for-life resource: air. We try to slow air degradation by trying to impose stricter anti-pollution regulations. Water is just as essential. Just because we can meter it does not make it less precious.

3. i remember when i lived in tucson AZ.... this was back in 89-91....
we lived on the air force base in a trailer. there were rules about watering.... days, times.... and i remember i'd walk to the bus stop past all the yards with the prickly brownish looking grass.... it was like needles.... and there would be one or two yards that were greener than green... you could tell the folks who were not following the rules. don't know if anything was ever done, if they got tickets or anything... but their lawns were always very green and looked almost like my yard here in ny.... it just ticked me off, frankly.

4. I know you should be watering your yards
at the correct time. I was talking about having your neighbor's turning you in. This tactic of embarrassing someone is stupid.

5. I'm not comfortable with encouraging people to narc on their neighbors
but the water belongs to everybody and it is a limited resource, and if I remember correctly, they are on a flat rate (no meters) so something needs to be done about people who water their lawns so much the water runs into the gutter.

It's cheaper than hiring a squad of water police to drive around and bust water wasters.

6. No more than bush and homeland security asking to watch our neighbors for suspicious behavior
If we don't report people then the government will have to hire more people to do the job that we are willing to do for free.

And what are water meters and computers for? Can't they tell how much water a person is using and when? Ours here in ohio are all electronic.

Fix the technology and problem is solved.
