Computer file transfer question
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 08:11 PM by MidwestTransplant
I just bought a new laptop and want to trasnfer files between computers. One runs XP the other Vista. I have a double USB cable that will do the trick. I bought it on Ebay. The software seems sketchy though. Does anybody know of any software I can download (for free hopefully) that will enable me to complete the file transfers.

I tried setting up a network and just doing it that way but I am having serious problems when it comes to that.

Thanks in advance

1. I'm surprised you'd need software at all
Can't you just plug in the USB and see each machine as a mapped drive from the other?

2. I would have thought so too but you can't. The computers don't find eachother.

12. As a former software programmer of emulation software, I thank you.
The extensive technical difficulties of creating emulation software that makes one system appear to another as a device of specific characteristics is often quite daunting. That programmers such as myself seem to have done a good enough job that it would look that simple to a user is high praise indeed.

 :hi:

3. I had problems setting up a home network between Vista and XP as well...
Try uploading a copy of "Network Magic" and you can probably get your transfer done before the trial runs out. You can find it at download.com.

Good Luck!

10. I took your suggestion. Worked great!
Took some time to get the printer shared through the firewall but finally got it going! Thanks for the great advice.

I may actually end up paying for the software when the trial is up.

5. Hard to explain on here really....
Guess my mind is shut off to tech mode tonight - but if you don't find a solution shortly PM me and I can give you my phone number and help you out. There are several possible solutions that should be easily implemented (Including sharing a drive, etc).

6. I will try the network wizard software that somebody recommended
I wouldn't want to bother you! I really appreciate the offer though. If all else fails, look for a PM. Thanks again.

7. Bothering me is good tonight :)
So don't hesitate.

If both are on the network at the same time you should be able to share a drive and grab the data. Even if not, there are solutions to explore.

11. Get Remote Administrator
http://www.radmin.com/">Remote Administrator

Been using it for years. No VPN crap, no network to set up, very small and reliable. You just plunk a copy on each machine, then run the server on one and the viewer on the other. (You'll probably want to set up password protection.) Easy file transfer. You get a 30 day free trial.
