Poll question: Guess how much this job pays?
Well I have finally found a job... (unless something goes wrong with the final formalities tomorrow)

GUESS how much it pays before reading the answer below....

Here are the job requirements for an AT&T premises technician position:

******Be on call 24/7******* including holidays
*College/technical training preferred
*Drive a company vehicle to customers premises and other locations in the field (telephone poles, boxes, etc)
*Climb telephone poles and work on them
*Climb ladders 28 feet
*Ability to work in attics and crawl spaces
*Wire outside VRAD boxes
*Work outside in all weather conditions
*Be able to work mandatory overtime 60-70 hour weeks
*Install and work on inside wires
*Install network interface devices
*Replace customer equipment
*Educate customers on service features
*Verify all services are working correctly
*Work independently with little supervison
*Near perfect driving record
*No criminal history

$9/hour!

Now I am not going to complain about this because there is certainly potential to move up to higher pay, and apparently the union is bargaining for much higher pay for this position as I write this from what I understand. (of course who knows if that will happen)

But DAMN is it that all jobs in this country are in a massive race to the bottom? This job pays as much as a fry cook.

1. Yeah, but being a fry cook makes your hair feel greasy.
So as long as you don't mind the bugs and the heat and the heights and the exhaustion you'll do fine.

4. Quite. $9/hr goes much farther in other countries... the cost of living must drop to be competitive.

3. How the frig does a person live on $9/hr? Especially given what AT&T charges,
which is on part for most carriers...

5. I suspect that's where the 60-70 hour weeks come in
I guess the logic is shit pay + crazy hours = living wage.

6. That's why there's all that "swell" (sarcasm intended) overtime in there!
I know a guy who routinely worked an eighty hour week at shit wages. Because he worked those long hours so regularly, his "base salary" was quite high, and positively affected his total UNEMPLOYMENT compensation when he got LAID OFF.

Talk about a rather sad "bright spot".....he knows he needs to find new work, but he's doing better than most on the dole because he worked so hard.

7. In the medium-term the goal is to make minimum wage The Wage.
Then the parasites can start cutting that.

9. Some of the techs that have come by our house are quite talented and deserve much more.
Others should not be employed at all.
