13. No, because unlike some idiots- or trolls- it's pretty obvious from the reports what went down here
Edited on Thu Jul-23-09 10:42 PM by depakid
And unlike most cowardly Americans- I don't feel the need to bolster up the cops when they get out of line.

from that.

Playing from emotion will just get you into trouble.

and you still wouldn't know whether I have a bar card- or two- not how many cases like this that I've seen in my life.

The bottom line of course is that we've got more than enough salient facts to know what went on.

32. In my dealings with rabid conservatives on other boards, and let me state that
Edited on Fri Jul-24-09 08:31 AM by MUAD_DIB
I am not implying that you are a rapid conservative, their tactic is usually to say that they are an expert on a matter without clearly providing proof of such expertise. Their MO is that "You can't prove me wrong so therefore I am what I say." I have had several bouts with a clownish conservative that claims he is a NY Attorney, but his responses leave me and the other members of that board with no doubt that he is a pretender.

If you are what you have suggested you are then I would have expected a more reasonable and less emotional response in your past postings on the subject of Professor Gates. If you are what you say you are then I would have expected that you would have at least identified yourself as a lawyer and not nibbled around the corners of such a possibility.

You can say that you are the Pope and demand that I prove it. Anonymity is always a sweet deal when pretending what or who you are not. The Onus is on you to prove your claim that you are indeed a lawyer, but if you are then your implied insults at another DUer leave me with great doubt of your honesty.

But all the facts are not in on this case. There has been a lot of posturing and crying and emotion about this matter, but I doubt that all the facts have surfaced for the general public to see.

That's what I am looking for before I make my own judgment, and although I am NOT a lawyer that is what I would expect from somebody who is or claims they are one.

12. Exactly...
The cop was a racist and went in with a preconceived notion of what the situation was, without getting all the fact, and then, when confronted with a different reality, refused to do the right thing. Professor Gates was exercising his right to free speech.

At least that's my preconceived notion of the what happened, without having all the facts.

Although the more people who witness an event, the more reliable the accounts will be (in aggregate). 1 vs 1 is a coin toss.

26. i know a man was arrested when he shouldnt have been. a cop escalated the situation
Edited on Thu Jul-23-09 10:44 PM by seabeyond
not deflated it which is his job. i know the cop didnt give his name and id (per cop and gates) which he has to provide. and i am pretty damn sure he lured gates outside with the intent to arrest him because he couldnt arrest him in his home. i know cop didnt like gates "tone" and that he didnt vote for obama.

all of that is bad cop to me

i imagine gates was irrate, unreasonable, sounded arrogant, and so what. he gets to be all that.

i know the cop didnt fear for his life, wasnt threatened, had no weapons drawn on him

and i know gates was sittin in his home not breaking any law

.... and .... plus .... Gates said .... the cop said .....

Beyond that you know nothing about what was actually said during their encounter.

But, don't let that stop you from making judgements about the prof or the cop.

Does your "court" of justice accept hearsay evidence?

And are you the same person who also reviews movies they haven't seen?

The charges were dropped.

Good.

Do you think that was because the charges were made against a prominent rich black man?

What if it had been a poor working class black man or woman or even a poor working class white person?

it at a press conference. Link to transcript provided

<snip> “Well, I should say at the outset that "Skip" Gates is a friend, so I may be a little biased here. I don't know all the facts. What's been reported, though, is that the guy forgot his keys, jimmied his way to get into the house, there was a report called into the police station that there might be a burglary taking place…”

.<snip>“Now, I don't know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that, but I think it's fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the Cambridge Police acted stupidly in arresting…”

I think it would have been better if he had simply said that it would not be appropriate to comment.
