Marijuana prohibition is unsustainable and more cruel than ever.
To think that any tax dollars are being spent at all to enforce this silly rule when so much else is in dire need is absurd; this is on top of millions of lives already impacted.

Maybe marijuana smokers should all turn themselves in next April 20? Swamp the system.

1. Enforcing the ridiculous laws surrounding marijuana may be a way to
sustain the economy by putting out of work people to building more prisons. :sarcasm:

2. It's way beyond insane at this point
Amsterdam has already proved that decriminalization does not lead to increased abuse.
But that's in Europe.
There's so many jerks in the U.S. - they'd probably screw the whole thing up.
Still, prohibition DEFINATELY doesn't work - pot is the largest cash crop in the country.
It's a total folly to continue this madness.

3. OH man
What a grand concept. Imagine...

The only folly would be in draconian places like Texas, Utah, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa etc... Murderers, Child molesters and other violent people would be set free to make space for the pot smokers.

4. "Murderers, Child molesters and other violent people would be set free to make space..."
It's been known to happen. Many of those other crimes don't require minimum, mandatory sentences like "Teh Evil Weed" does.

6. I agree. So what do we do to end it?
Seems like we need to remove marijuana from the federal Controlled Substances Act.

Then, the states that want to legalize it can do so without fear of the feds.

But waiting for action at the federal level probably means waiting years...I'm getting impatient.

8. I believe the Prison Reform Act that Jim Webb is talking about...
Edited on Fri Jul-10-09 03:29 PM by CrownPrinceBandar
will deal with prohibition on the Federal end. And it won't come in the form of condoning it. It'll look like the state's problem. The Feds won't enforce.

The fun starts when it gets kicked back to the states. I see states like mine and all the other conservative states fighting it as long as it remains profitable to do so.

Don't lose patience. It'll happen. Too many people are discovering the truth.

22. Well, there is a legalization bill in the California legislature
AB 390, introduced by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco).

The Marijuana Policy Project is running TV ads in support of it this week, although some major market stations refused to run them.

Here's a Drug War Chronicle story about it:

11. What about the idea of pot smokers turning themselves in?
Would that be an effective action, or would most people say, "You first, dude."?

13. To demonstrate the futility of this aspect of their war.
To demonstrate that they could never handle this issue with their 'solution' (imprisonment).

15. I think "they" know this.
But most of "they" have no other ideas or solutions to handle this "problem".

Not in favor of that idea (turning themselves in).

Edited on Fri Jul-10-09 03:42 PM by CrownPrinceBandar
but I believe its too cerebral of a statement for most folks. I think the headline would read: "Sensing futility, pot smokers turn themselves in. Police Chief: "Thanks guys. Next time bring donuts too.""

23. If all the pot smokers turned themselves in at once it would be a HUGE boost to the economy.
Think of all those corrections officer positions that would open up all of a sudden. That and all the new prisons they'd have to build to hold the lawbreakers.

A veritable stimulus package for the Prisons for Profit Industry.

14. Attitudes are changing...
I got a good laugh at this in the local paper yesterday...

Marijuana among items stolen from local resident
Mary Jo Denton
Herald-Citizen Staff
Thursday, Jul 09, 2009
COOKEVILLE -- A burglar stole marijuana, cash, and other items at a Lee Avenue residence last week, police said.

The victim told Cookeville Police Officer Cary Matheney that she had been away and came home July 5 and found a window in the back door had been "smashed and someone had entered the home."

The thief took $280 in cash, a gold chain valued at $200, a DVD player, and a $10 bag of marijuana, the officer's report says.

"The window looked as if someone threw a rock through it, but there was no item left inside the apartment," the officer noted.

He notified detectives, who are investigating.

As IF these Tennessee cops are going to find and return her MJ to her! When I was this woman's age, the cops would have returned shortly with a sack, handed it to her, and arrested her. The belief that this was legitimate property by the woman, and the fact that the paper even printed it, caught me off guard.

21. some places it is like twilight zone.
I swear in Utah or Texas, you could be covered in blood, with the body in the back seat...
no problems until.
the officer "smells" the M-J and sees the pipe.
you will be searched and arrested for the dope you smoked the last of, three weeks ago.

Rod Serling would be proud.

Only it was a dead cat in the bloody bag.
