How many miles per day do you drive?
One of the knocks on electric cars is the limited range which is roughly 100 miles.

How far do you drive in a normal day?

2. I average 15 miles per day.
Edited on Fri Apr-06-07 06:24 PM by Straight Shooter
Most of that is driving to where I hike. But I work from home, so my mileage is not typical at all.

I think 100 miles capacity is reasonable for most people, though, if they don't think it's too much trouble to recharge the car every 2 or 3 days.

17. Sherry Boschert was just on NPR today around 3pm. She verified that. We already have the technology
to make cars that go 150 on a charged battery.

And those batteries last at least 100,000 miles.

These cars have already been made.

Ford recalled the ones they made for California and crushed them after watering down CA's mandate for 0-emission fleets.

Can anyone do the math for me for approximate miles per day?

We're retired, and I have no clue how many miles I drive. Where's the calculator? Help, please!

Thanks in advance.

Let's see -- where do I start...?

within a reasonable range for an electric car.

My only problem with electric cars is the pollution shifting (from the point where the car is recharged to the point where the electricity is generated). I've been to Black Mesa...

Edited on Fri Apr-06-07 06:27 PM by hlthe2b
It's a catch22... no direct way to travel via mass transit (bus would require three transfers and over 90 minutes each way), absolutely no way to ride a bike even if I got an electric assisted on--highway restrictions disallow and no side streets that don't wind miles out of the way...

I'd dearly love an all electric--one of those California Rav4s would have been perfect for me...

If there were something available and affordable, hell, I would have approached my employer about installing a recharge station... It would cost pennies for them and far less than they have to reimburse me for personal vehicle use when I travel for outside meetings.

I drive to and from work, stop off for errands only along the route and walk to do nearly everything else on weekends (live in town, work out in the foothills).

Edited on Fri Apr-06-07 06:29 PM by cryingshame
edit- her name is Sherry Boschert.

Cars have already been manufactured and are on the road that do 150 miles.

Sherry drives a Toyota RAV (?) that gets 150.

Ford manufactured the EV (?) and then, after lobbying California to water down its mandate for zero emission cars... they DEMANDED the cars they'd made back from California and then crushed them.

BTW - Jay Leno's 1906 electric car gets 150 miles on a charge too. It's absolutely criminal that electics have not gained anything in 100 years.

12. On a work day 84 miles.
I make no excuse for choosing the place I live at. I am not suited to living in a suburb or city, I am far too sensitive to noise and rude people to deal with it successfully.
I AM however planning on leaving my employer within a year or two and try my own thing at home.

The other drawback for electric cars is the power has to be generated at a power plant. Unless we build a heck of a lot of solar/wind/hydro generation plants we will still be polluting.

32. I ditched my car more than 10 years ago
Granted, I live in the middle of the city, and I walk to work. I take the bus or the subway everywhere else, almost every day. I occasionally rent a car for out-of-town trips, but my monthly transportion bill is about $50 (including taxis); no car insurance, no car payment, no gas, no parking fees, no inspection stickers, no maintenance, no tickets. I realize I'm lucky, but I'm trying to do my part. In the beginning, I did it because of the expense; now I do it by choice. I walk about 2-3 miles every day. I wish every city was as great as Boston for the non-driving public.

For many years I averaged zero.

I might add, I would average zero now, even far from town, if there were no cars on the road. It's the cars that keep me off my bike.

Edit- And that average of two INCLUDES moving 300 miles. Six trips.

I should have just said 0-1 mile per day.

so I guess I average (generously estimating 20 total miles on weekends)about 16 miles/day. More than I would like, but $$ forced me to live in a different town than where I work. Still, I could easily get by with an electric car, if I could afford the initial outlay.

I am a caregiver, so it depends on whether and where I take Hubby to the doctor's appointment. It is about 10 miles into what passes for "town" here, to where one can find doctors, larger grocery stores, shops, thrift stores,(and the dread MallWart) etc. Our little village has most amenities and the basics are within walking distance.

I try to have a "no-drive" day once a week, if my schedule allows.

6 if i'm using mass transit, 30 if i'm putting around my local community doing errands. if i'm going to an event, and specifically need my car (perhaps the mass transit doesn't run that late), an average of 80 round trip. but those are special occasions. when i used to do a heavy commute, down into Silicon Valley and back, it averaged around 60 miles -- but hours idle in traffic!

I don't know if I could sustain such a record, given the morphology of many American cities, once I leave college and find a job. American cities are sprawling, designed for cars, not pedestrian traffic. It is difficult to get around many cities without a car, especially if there is no adequate mass transit system.

Some days, not at all. Some days, just to the post office or nearby store, not much more than 5 miles round trip. But a few times a year I'll take a cross-country trip of 20 hours straight, each way, say to dog shows or conventions. There's an average in there somewhere, but I'm too lazy to calculate it out. :)

BTW, my knock on the electric car isn't the 100-mile range. It's that it's so small and doesn't appear safe.

In my town, to get anywhere, one must venture on the interstates and both I-40 and I-75 MEET in my city, creating a lot of truck traffic. Driving around in anything smaller than a the larger-type sports cars or a sedan is detrimental to one's health with all the semis on the road.
