I like Conyers, but I just don't see how he couldn't have known that his wife is about as corrupt as they come.

1. It's sad how some married couples just don't communicate anymore.

3. How much money was involved?
She could have had her own bank accounts. They might even have filed separate tax returns.

Seriously though, checks don't make noise when being deposited.

5. Maybe they aren't very close.
Lots of couples are distant even though legally married.

Who knows?

6. Um because she did not tell him?
That would be my guess. But obviously you have inside information that you should share with the DA involved in this case.

19. Well, it would also involve him not reading the paper
Even over here in CA I knew that Monica Conyers had a reputation for gutter politics, You don't need to get your news from GOP sources to see that, just keep an eye on the Detroit papers (which I've been doing over the last year to keep up with what's happening in the auto industry). I'm sorry to say so, but if John Conyers has been unaware of her antics it's a case of wilful ignorance.

20. The OP implied John Conyers was 'in on it'.
Yes of course John knew his wife was accused of lots of things. Between indictment and guilty plea in the Synagro case, I'm certain John knew about the charges and Monica's involvement. However the OP clearly meant that John was in on it, i.e. involved and aware as the crimes Monica plead guilty to were committed. For that there is no evidence that I know of, and nor do I suspect that the OP knows of. The OP is simply certain, without any facts put forth, that John Conyers must be guilty of something.

24. No, the OP just asks how could he not know
Which I think is a perfectly legitimate question. Monica Conyers is like a walking advert for poor governance and has been since before she was charged. The best I can say is that love can result in staggering levels of self-deception.

he didn't.

27. Did you know you can read newspapers on the internet?
It's really amazing.

http://www.freep.com/ - The (unfortunately named website) Detroit Free Press
http://www.detnews.com/ - Detroit News

I'm NOT saying he was involved in any bribery or corruption. But you'd think he would said 'we need to talk...'. Of course, maybe that's why she entered a guilty plea rather than flaming out spectacularly in court.

22. Political marriages seem to be different that ordinary people's.
Maybe it's because they live apart a lot of the time and start developing separate lives. I know it happened to my parents who were often separated for months, even years at a time by my dad's job and other circumstances beyond their control. My mother developed uncontrolled spending habits unknown to my father until the debt crashed around her and he had to find out.

Monica Conyer's role as a Detroit city council member was controversial, to put it mildly.
