Poll question: Which of these music icons do you own an album/CD/tape by?
We're talking full-length, original albums exclusively by that artist.

3. If Beatles albums count, then it's one vote for Lennon
If not, then it's "None of the above"

7. Damn amazing, but I don't
or if I do, it would be in storage and I don't remember.

Then again the music of my youth was in spanish, loaded on the IPOD. And a lot of it is really deep poetry put to music

8. I had the "I'm too cool for that" disease when I was in my 20s.
Ask me about Bauhaus and Teardrop Explodes, and I'll give you an hour.

9. I don't consider Beatles albums
to be "exclusively by that artist" as they included 3 other artists so I own none.

I used to own Thriller (or was it my brother's? sister?) on vinyl but I think sold it at a garage sale.

11. I have most of the original "records" (Vinyl) that Elvis made.
I also have a lotta Pavarotti on CD, but I didn't see him on your list.

14. How come they are all men?
I don't see even Miss Ross, and she's had like 18 number one records...

but I have MJ and Lennon and no Elvis...an ex-b/f's family were fanatic fans of his many years ago...

asking the good folks of DU to rank the icons.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=5927749&mesg_id=5927749

I was curious to see if there would be a difference between stated preference and ownership of the music in question.

And on edit:

Yes, there is a difference.

36% of people who voted own a Michael Jackson album, 48% own a John Lennon album, and 16% own an Elvis album. Very different than the 18/61/21 breakdown of ranking.

17. I have multiple albums by all of 'em.
But I have a BUNCH of albums.

:P

And if you have to own just ONE album by each I recommend:

Elvis Presley - The Complete Sun Sessions - I generally dislike recommending compilations, but this one is perfect, and actually seems more of a piece than some of his earl classic albums (Elvis, Elvis Presley, etc).

John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band - This blew my mind the first time I heard it. Listen to it with headphones and see another person's soul exposed.

Michael Jackson - Off The Wall - I think it edges Thriller by a whisker, mainly because of "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" which had as much urgency as the Buzzcock's "Orgasm Addict" without the (explicitly) naughty bits.

Enjoy! You can probably get these at your local public library (thanks for those, Democrats!).

21. MJ and Elvis
at least if my Elvis CD counts. It's not an original album. It's a CD of 20 #1 hits by him. The MJ isn't 'original' either. It's History, a two CD greatest hits.
