Quick Question: Are the right-wing talking heads scaring the bejesus out of their listeners?

I was reading a Stephen King novel about world disaster. To my fundy mother, that in and of itself is a sin. She asked, "How can you read about that fake stuff and not be interested in the real stuff." I couldn't help smiling...a fundy telling me about "real" stuff. That's rich. :)

"What 'real' stuff would that be?" I asked.

"You know, the stuff that's going to happen. All the policemen and everyone are taking survival courses. Things are going to get really bad."

OK.

First of all, I'm out of nearly every loop there is because my emotional health is in jeopardy. Stephen King novels are nice fluffy bunnies compared to some of what goes on inside my head. I consider them pure escapism.

Last year when I was in the middle of a med change, my mom said that in six months things were going to be so bad I may not be able to even get my meds. For some reason, that suggestion took root in my head and grew to epic proportions. A person suffering through some really bad medication trips doesn't need extra crappola. I was on the edge of a panic attack for about six weeks, couldn't be left alone, etc.

Yeah, lefties have their doomsday scenarios, too, but I'm getting tired of people trying to scare the living crap out of me.

Anyone know where she's getting this stuff? I know she didn't come up with it on her own. Talking heads? Which ones? Fundy church?

Haven't seen you post in a while. Hope you are doing OK & meds are working better. Know what you mean about staying out of loops that turn me loopy. For awhile I couldn't even bear to come to DU.

I occasionally pop in to get a pulse or to ask why mother seems crazier this week. :)

As for my issues, nothing much seems to be helping. In order to get better I need to move; in order to move I need to get better.

I don't know what to do.

is your mother trying to drive you over the edge? She doesn't seem to be helping what goes on inside your head.

6. This seems to work

every time I've tried it on the doomsday fundies. When she comes up with anything that is "going to happen", make a bet with her that it won't. Even offer to write it down. "They are going to take away guns", ok, I'll bet you $500. that no one has their guns taken from them in the next 5 years. Some how money brings them back to reality.

when I drive home on some evenings I surf the AM radio and pick up Michael Savage. he goes on and on and on about Obama sending 'brownshirts' into peoples towns and taking over their homes and he uses Holocaust images of Obama's thugs rounding people up in the middle of the night. I kid you not.

She mentioned more and more people becoming survivalists, especially policemen. When she said it, it sounded like something repeated third-hand. Is Savage bringing up stuff like this? (Don't think I could stomach a listen in my current mood.)

he warns people that they will lose their guns, homes, livelihood...when obama's brownshirts force their way into their towns..people call his show and talk about how they are readying themselves for the impending doom..
