8. It's the easy drive one
My partner has 1/2 day today - so we may be able to start looking for a car this afternoon

tomorrow is nuts for us - have to help decorate a hall for a big birthday party that evening...

meanwhile - local airport has a good deal on a 7-day rental

have to discuss this with my partner... she's still sleeping at the moment
I think the good news can wait a hour more until she's awake and has full brain functionality...

2. I like Enterprise :)
Until I got my jeep, there were months I would have one of their cars on weekly rent. One nice thing is they have a lot of non-airport locations and I would rent there and go back there every two weeks to renew. :)

Rent a car. That way, you can take your time and find the right one for your needs.

Was this the one with the easy or the difficult drive? I remember that post from earlier today.

15. Be careful when buying a car under pressure
READ everything to be sure you are not getting screwed. If possible get your own bank to mortgage it, don't use the dealers bank. This is how I was burned. I should have gotten my own financing.

20. no problem there
my partner has a nose for deals, I'm letting her handle it

she wants me to for a new car, even though the new job pays good - budget is still tight, I'm leaning more towards a certified used car. We have some good connections and will be tapping them on the shoulder to see what kind of deal I can get.

We have rented me a car for the week - so it's not going to be a mad dash around.

22. and get the Consumer Reports car edition (March, I think)
if you are buying used - it has great information on the track record of cars over time. For used cars I would look at the annual review (the book version highlighting the work of the year) as well as the March edition - it even gives suggested price ranges for different makes/models/years.

24. Before you buy a used car (or any car)
Check out Consumer Reports' Used Car Guide.

Specifically look at the repair history on any car you are thinking of buying.

Congratulations on getting a job you wanted.

Don't jump into the first one you find though, or you'll probably just wind up with someone else's headache they are trying to unload. If you were here in East Tennessee I'd loan you one of mine for a while. I'm glad things are looking up for you now.

26. Yahoo!
If you can, get an older (1990s) Geo Prizm if you can find one in good condition. Why? Because it is a Toyota Corolla--the only thing GM changed was the radio! The engines last a long time (mine finally gave up the ghost at 250K) and they get terrific gas mileage. But the best part is they sell for HALF of what they want for the same year Corolla!

I'm so happy for you!

31. yes, it's the easy drive one
the other company on top of the Mountain did call me yesterday - apprantly there was some emergency production problem going on and the guy was tied up with that. he did ask me to hold on until Monday-Tuesday

so for a few hours I was looking at 2 job possibilities. But, this morning's e-mail cinched it for me. More money, better drive and they are calling me a DESIGNER not just a drafter. Overall it looks like this place has more potential for advancement.

going to call them in about an hour to seal the deal.

have a car rental set up, so I have someway to get to work for the week

My partner will be making a few calls to connections she has for cars - see what can be done.

34. Best used car (performance, reliability for $$$) is a Used 3 or 5 series BMW 1992-2000
Congratulations on your job btw! :applause:

Regarding getting a used car - most people will always go look at getting an old japanese or detroit beater thinking they can't afford more...until they are at the mechanics shop or late for work because their car died. Most people never think of looking at a BMW because they think its too expensive. This is a myth. Used 3 or 5 series BMW's between the years of 1992-2000 are very affordable. Ask any mechanic who knows these cars - if maintained properly and the usual wear and tear and replacement of parts on a car over time, these cars can easily get 250K+ mileage....

They get decent mileage and are safe and reliable. They drive great, and in winter time drive well in snow. Take a look. You mentioned your near Wilkes-Barre, PA, here are a few examples off Autotrader.com:

44. You're not buying a car, you're buying information about a car.
That's my sister's motto.

It means that if you can buy a used car from a friend whom you know will tell you truth about the car, you're better off than buying a spiffy car from the used car lot.

Another plan: go to a good mechanic and ask for leads to a used car.

Good luck!

If you belong to AAA, check out their car-buying assistance program. Gives you the low-down on dealer overhead, buying/selling tactics, etc. If you don't belong, consider joining. I use them as my travel agent too. Good deals for that vacation you'll be able to afford soon!

54. readers digest version
-- laid off with no notice on March 23

-- went to job interview the following week, was suppose to get a call this week

-- totaled my car this past monday (it's dead, not worth fixing)

-- went to another job interview with a different company yesterday, borrow my partner's truck to get there

-- on way home, stopped at store, got into the truck to find it had NO BRAKES (seal or something blew)... drove it very carefully a couple of blocks to our mechanic and got it fixed

-- received an e-mail from the 2nd interview with a job offer. easier commute, better pay and other advantages - so I start on monday
