Bears meet motorcycle.
This is really cool, though I don't know if I'd have ridden off or stayed. It makes for a great story, though.

2. Black bears are very dangerous wild animals who can and will kill you
Especially when cubs are around. That guy is stupid and very lucky.

15. I agree with you, Lost......
I live around them. They are extremely dangerous - particularly Mama with cubs! I cannot believe the guy stopped. Black bear are getting out of control in Virginia (probably other states as well). Less than 3 miles from my house, a black bear attacked and mauled a man several years ago (he lived, but barely). Please, people, don't fall for the "they are cute and gentle crap" - stay out of their way!

20. I agree. But her bike had overheated.........

and she could ride no further until it cooled down (you can see the steam rising in the second shot at link). At that point I think the best thing to do would to be as unobtrusive and non-aggressive as you can and hope for the best.

24. LIVA: I remember a news article years ago on a foreign tourist who
posed with a bear in a western national park while his friend took pics. The bear attacked and killed him.
They are not tourist attractions.
They are 600 pound meat eaters.
We are meat.

8. I hate to sound like my mother, but what if the bears had burned themselves on the tailpipe.
I live in fear of this from humans. I have a red motorcycle, and little boys are drawn to it like candy. I try to park it with the tailpipe next to a building but amazingly enough, parents don't think about the tailpipe at all. Little Johnny runs towards the bike, "Vroom vroom Mommy!" and not one parents has yelled, "No! Hot!" To date no one (other than me of course) has burned himself on my tailpipe, so I guess I'm a worry wart.

10. Resort area black bears are slobs.
Edited on Tue Jun-16-09 12:02 PM by LeftHander
Given a chance they will feed on dumpster trash, restaurant grease and baby diapers...

I've seen giant black bear males that looked obese and were disgusting and smelly with rancid restaurant grease and fish guts smeared all over them.

:puke:

But to be fair on the cuteness...many years ago a juvenile male was eating out of a pagoda roof shaped platform bird feeder nailed to a stump in my front yard. It sat on it's butt, upright with the stump between it's legs. Then it got it's head stuck in the bird feeder and pulled the feeder off the stump. It was sitting there with a bird feeder over it's head trying to pull it off with paws on either side. My 3 year old daughter, wife and I laughed and laughed. I think hearing my daughter's toddler cackle was cracking us up even more. It ran into the woods shaking the feeder off as it ran...super hilarious.

One of the few cute "bear" moments when I lived in Northern Wisconsin. Most others were terrifying or disgusting.

Later a rouge big male would keep my wife and daughter trapped in the house for three hours as it tried to get in.

22. That is one very stupid motorcycle rider
First off she should not have shut that engine off until she had two things - coolant and a downhill slope. Second, to stop with the thought that a bear was a good thing to take a picture of was dam near suicidal in its stupidity.

26. She didn't.
She stopped to let her motor cool, as it was overheating, probably due to some malfunction. Then the bears appeared.
Most animals may attack something that is trying to run away. It is a natural tendency. So to be calm and not do anything wild was the best thing. The lady did say she was trying to start the engine to drive away, but without any sudden movements that would spook the bear.
