... in our history. I'm still a little upset, but on the whole I'm pleased with how I handled it.
I tried to tailor my reply to my audience. I said (as I have before to such callers) that I am a praying woman and that I believe that abortion is a deeply personal and often tragic decision, and although I had never had to make that decision myself, I believe that abortion needs to remain the law of the land as it has for over 30 years. I went on in that vein, saying that I have been a supporter of Planned Parenthood for all this time because I believe that PP and other such organizations prevent far more abortions than they perform. The man on the other end was very polite. I ended by saying, "Please stop this" and hung up gently.
I think -- that is, I hope it is true -- that by framing my argument in this fashion I may get through to at least one person, whether volunteer or paid phone-bank worker. Not that they will suddenly become pro-choice, but that they will have cause to know that a pro-choice woman such as myself is not a demonic caricature, but possibly a person like themselves.
All of what I said is true -- I do pray (though I did not mention to which deity :D), I've never had an abortion, I believe it's a deeply personal decision, and I have supported PP for over 40 years. Someone calling on behalf of Beverly LaHaye doesn't need to know that I've volunteered at PP, marched in Washington DC and Los Angeles and my own town, and generally been a passionate and sometimes outraged supporter of women's right to choose whether to terminate a pregnancy, whether "tragic" or not.
I hope someone on the other side hears me.
Peace.
