I'm watching "Glory" and I had some thoughts
I was watching the movie and one character said that he was going to run/had run for president (I have a bad memory, so please excuse me. Actually, while I'm at it, if I say something that seems like I'm saying something bad, I don't mean it. I don't have a good way with words, either)

I was thinking what a wonderful country we live in that we can have an African-American president. I was thinking how far we have come since the days of slavery and the Civil War. Then I thought, "This country is still not equal". There are more people out there who would vote for an open homosexual than for an atheist (I happen to be both, well, bi leaning towards lesbian). This country has come a long way, but we still have a long way to go. There needs to be real separation of church and state, not the Fundies throwing millions of dollars at their candidate while atheists and religious moderates who are not as well organized but numerous stand aside and don't congregate politically.

I know that a lot of people here are politically active, and I'm not referring to you. We should strive for not only equality for gays, but equality for the non-Christians in the country as well. I'm sick and tired of the religious right getting in the way of true equality- single payer health care; marriage for gays and lesbian;, abortion rights for those who need it and contraceptive educations; and acceptance of those of us who, through careful thought and deliberation have chosen not to believe in a god. I have respect for those who believe in God, just not those who try to ram God and whatever misogynist beliefs that are the current trend.

I know this is a place where people stand and fight for these beliefs, and I have the utmost respect for you. In the words of my alma mater, USC, "Fight On!" You guys are doing great to make this country equal for everyone. We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.

3. People here saw Obama's election as proof that "anyone" could be president!
Really, they did.

5. It's still a long time before an atheist could be president
Sooner for a gay person, but atheists have been condemned as without morals, and therefore unable to lead a country.

I don't need a Bible to tell me right from wrong. I have always lived my life to help other people, and that is something that is inherent in me. I didn't need Jesus to tell me to love one another. I just always have.

4. Good post - and an excellent movie. "I run for president - didn't
win though". That was funny.

6. Something I forgot to add
I don't want to forget equal rights for transgendered people. They are so overlooked by society, and by gays and lesbians as well. I have noticed that a lot of people in GLBTA are afraid of the T. This comes from personal experience. I just want to give a big hug to any transgendered person reading this and say "I'm sorry. I can't wait for the day you become equal as well" Transgendered people are treated as less than human, being forced to go into opposite sex bathrooms for lack of a unisex one... just imagine if you couldn't use the bathroom in public for fear of retaliation? Once again, I'm sorry I forgot transgendered, but you are still on my mind.
