Poll question: Do you think Obama is doing a better job than the last President?
In my opinion Obama's Presidency so far is just marginally better than Bush's. I see it that way for three big reasons.

1. He still supports corporate bailouts & windfalls to executives even though he claims he wants to restrict executive pay.

2. He is VERY anti-gay.

3. He's not making that much of an effort to end the war in Iraq.

The only real plus is that he seems to want to push for health care reform, but we'll see if this is another broken promise and/or a boon to big health care corporations.

4. Not a joke.
IMO, if he keeps the Iraq war going for the rest of his term, and continues to fail to deliver on his campaign promises, he could possibly be considered as bad as Bush by most Americans.

11. You can't blame them.
With all the claims that people *here* are ready to bail on him and vote for someone else in the primary in '12?

3. He ended torture
That alone makes him a much better president than Bush. And he's already set a timeline for withdrawal from Iraq - we can't just yank the troops out tomorrow with causing more chaos in Iraq.

I agree with the gay issues thing though - he's been doing a very poor job so far on that score.

6. I will address those three points in order:
1. He has made efforts to restrain the excesses of executives and has imposed so many restrictions on TARP that banks are itching to get rid of it even though it leaves their capital positions weakened going into a period of large scale commercial real estate write downs. We are getting large amounts of our money back and with interest. As far as the auto companies, the fact that Chrysler is now a union-owned company and GM will be a largely union-owned company is an impressive outcome given the alternatives. If the bondholders and right-wingers in Congress had their way the unions would have been completely broken and the bondholders, being the vultures that they are, would have sacked those companies for all that they were worth.

Obama's broader economic policies are very much to the left of George W. Bush. When you compare the stimulus bill the Democrats passed to what the Republicans proposed, they are worlds apart and our bill supports progressive initiatives such as public educations, health care for children, green energy, etc. His long term budget outline puts us on the most liberal track since the 1960s.

2. This is simply not true. His justice department is legally obligated to defend existing law. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the obligations the legal profession exists under or the obligations of DOJ specifically, but it's worth looking up so you are not so angry all of the time.

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" on the other hand, should be repealed, but I have confidence that at some point in his administration it will be.

3. How fast did you want it to end? A week? Even three months? Both of those are not reasonable. There are significant logistical concerns that have to be addressed in the process there. We are already pulling out of almost all Iraqi cities, including Mosul even though Mosul is not a "secured" city. The timeline is in place and our presence will be heavily reduced in a year.

I think you want to believe the worst, so you do.

and W was better than Obama - we were all so much better off under the leadership of Cheney and Bush. Bush was a president with international gravitas :banghead: Actually Cheney says he is pro-gay marriage so maybe in 2012?

I guess you are in good company with the right wing GOP

I'm not, but Obama might be someday.

If only we could get Dennis Kucinich, a REAL progressive elected.

22. If you possess any ability whatever to appreciate the finer points of arguments, then you have .....
...... to admit you're full of shit.

Except for a few loonie outliers, I have observed NO ONE here say they would have preferred Palin/McCain over Obama. What I see are a (rather quite) few advocates for Dean or Edwards or Kucinich, etc., or a nameless lefty over Obama.

Many others like Obama, but really, deeply dislike one or several of his policy stances.

And go ahead .... call me a "hater" ....... that's the usual mindless rebut to what I've just said.

.... you were saying ...... ??

17. Unfortunately, he is a centrist politician. He ran as one and is behaving as one.
He's a politician tinkering with a corrupt political system that needs more than a few cosmetic changes. But, that's what he promised to do. Tinker.

Lofty speeches and promises do not "change" make.

37. So I guess we can't strongly disagree with a lot of Obama's policies?
Wow.

This is almost getting as bad as that other place where you could never disagree with anything Bush/Cheney did. Anyway, it's not just me, many GLBT DUers have not been happy with the status quo lately, and also members who have lost friends or family in this seemingly endless Iraq war.

The main point of this thread is that we were sold a lot of empty promises. I will support someone other than Obama in 2012, but that only someone right now would be Kucinich. Here's why:
