GOP Ignites Firestorm By Revealing Classified Info From Intel Briefings
Intel firestorm: GOP reveals briefing info
By Jared Allen
Posted: 06/04/09 09:45 PM

Republicans ignited a firestorm of controversy on Thursday by revealing some of what they had been told at a closed-door Intelligence Committee hearing on the interrogation of terrorism suspects.

Democrats immediately blasted the GOP lawmakers for publicly discussing classified information, while Republicans said Democrats are trying to hide the truth that enhanced interrogation of detainees is effective.

GOP members on the Intelligence Committee on Thursday told The Hill in on-the-record interviews that they were informed that the controversial methods have led to information that prevented terrorist attacks.

When told of the GOP claims, Democrats strongly criticized the members who revealed information that was provided at the closed House Intelligence Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations hearing. Democrats on the panel said they could not respond substantively, pointing out that the hearing was closed.

In the bowels of the Capitol Visitor Center, members of the panel gathered behind locked doors on Thursday morning to begin a series of hearings on the interrogation of terrorism suspects.

What began as a remarkably quiet and secretive hearing had, within a matter of hours, exploded into a political brawl over intelligence matters and national security.

3. Somehow this argument has to stop
It DOES NOT MATTER whether this or that bit of information was gleaned. It is illegal. It is a war crime.

Rationalizing it the way these a-holes do is just saying "we have decided to secede from the civilized world"

14. You are so right!
It doesn't even matter.

It really doesn't (although I do tend to believe the folks who say it is ineffective).

Perhaps I could obtain actionable intelligence from a father of seven by lining his children up and shooting them all point blank in the head til he talks.

So then...it should be legal?

4. They have no morals. The chamions against abortion HAVE NO MORALS.
The champions against homosexuality HAVE NO MORALS.
The vote stealers and justic preventors HAVE NO MORALS.

We still haven't figured out what their moral disease is.

6. Dr Bob Altemeyer has them pretty well figured out..
He calls them "double highs", scoring high on both the Authoritarian Follower scale and the Social Dominator scale.

Read Dr Bob's book about his decades of research into these people for free on the internet, you can even copy and print to pass out as you like.

http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/

OK, what’s this book about? It’s about what happened to the American government after "conservatives" gained control of Congress in the 1990s and the White House in 2000. It’s about the disastrous decisions that government made, which have created the enormous problems we face now. It’s about the corruption that rotted the Congress. It’s about how traditional conservatism has nearly been destroyed by authoritarianism. It’s about how the “Religious Right” teamed up with amoral authoritarian leaders to push its un-democratic agenda onto the country.

“Well,?? you might be thinking, “I don’t believe any of this is true.” Or maybe you’re thinking, “What else is new? I’ve known this all along.” Why should a conservative, moderate, or liberal bother with this book? Why should any Republican, Independent, or Democrat click the “Introduction” link on this page?

Because if you do, you’ll begin an easy-ride journey through some relevant scientific studies I have done on authoritarian personalities--one that will take you a heck of a lot less time than the decades it took me. Those studies have a direct bearing on all the topics mentioned above. So if you think the first paragraph is a lot of hokum, or full of half-truths, I invite you to look at the research.

For example, take the following statement: “Once our government leaders and the authorities condemn the dangerous elements in our society, it will be the duty of every patriotic citizen to help stomp out the rot that is poisoning our country from within.” Sounds like something Hitler would say, right? Want to guess how many politicians, how many lawmakers in the United States agreed with it? Want to guess what they had in common?

Or how about a government program that persecutes political parties, or minorities, or journalists the authorities do not like, by putting them in jail, even torturing and killing them. Nobody would approve of that, right? Guess again.

Don’t think for a minute this doesn’t concern you personally. Let me ask you, as we’re passing the time here, how many ordinary people do you think an evil authority would have to order to kill you before he found someone who would, unjustly, out of sheer obedience, just because the authority said to? What sort of person is most likely to follow such an order? What kind of official is most likely to give that order, if it suited his purposes? Look at what experiments tell us, as I did.

If, on the other hand, you’re way ahead of me, and believe the extreme right-wing elements in America are still working to take over the country despite the recent election--nay because of it--I think you can still get a lot from this book. The authoritarians aren’t going away.

The studies explain so much about these people. Yes, the research shows they are very aggressive, but why are they so hostile? Yes, experiments show they are almost totally uninfluenced by reasoning and evidence, but why are they so dogmatic? Yes, studies show the Religious Right has more than its fair share of hypocrites, from top to bottom; but why are they two-faced, and how come one face never notices the other? Yes, their leaders can give the flimsiest of excuses and even outright lies about things they’ve done wrong, but why do the rank-and-file believe them? What happens when authoritarian followers find the authoritarian leaders they crave and start marching together?

I think you’ll find this book “explains a lot.” Many scattered impressions about the enemies of freedom and equality become solidified by science and coherently connected here.

You think I’m pulling your leg? Push the button.

8. These GOOPers Need To Be Waterboarded...
They disclosed secret, classified information. Isn't this a time of "war"? And they're spewing classified info? Surely all those who did the disclosure should now be put in orange jump suits and treated as the traitors and threats to society that they are.

I knew this was going to happen. Cheney has been screaming for parsed parts of secret documents to be released knowing that President Obama won't comply. That's all well and good cause surely there is material inside of those briefings that would refute crashcart, so instead, do what rushpublicans are always good for...leaking and lying.

Someone else posted a poll that shows 52% polled would find torture justified...(appauling as it may sound)...and this is where this shit is aimed at. As long as it appears the torture "worked" or "kept us safe", then many in this country are willing to look the other way rather than call them the war crimes they are. The moment those numbers go south on cheney, then he's in real trouble.

Here's hoping the rushpublicans continue to overplay this one (and they are)...and forces not only full disclosure, but gives Speaker Pelosi and others more and more justification for setting up investigations into these charges and other crimes of the past 8 years. They keep playing chicken with national security...time to drop the hammer on 'em. Call their bluff. Let's open it all up...photos, testimony of the tortured...I'm all for full disclosure. Let's rumble!

9. Looks like Cheney really does have a few "stay-behinds" as Hersh suggested.
And not all of them are in the Pentagon or at State. This has got to be making him very pleased right now.
