Lawmaker arrested for driving drunk in East Lansing
Midday update

Associated Press

A state lawmaker faces a possible second drunken driving charge within the past two years.

Rep. John Garfield, a Republican from Rochester Hills, was arrested early Thursday in the East Lansing area by Michigan State University campus police, his office said Friday.

Garfield, 57, also was arrested for drunken driving in 2005. He then checked himself into a rehabilitation center, noting he had a problem that was aggravated by pain medication he has taken for several years.

Garfield later pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of driving while impaired in the 2005 incident.

''This is an ongoing battle he is fighting with alcohol,'' Dave Jessup, Garfield's chief of staff, said Friday. ''He is home in the district and is taking steps to deal with this.''

Let's look at his voting record regarding drunk driving:

For the second time in two years, state Rep. John Garfield (R-Rochester Hills) has been busted for drunk driving. This comes three months after Rep. Garfield voted for SB 1241 and HB 6009, two bills which tighten penalties for repeat drunk drivers.

1. Second DUI usually includes a penalty of community service
and/or imprisonment, not to mention a much longer period of suspension. Bet his attorney got him to AA meetings ASAP before the court hearing.

2. What Sort Of Jurisdiction Do "Campus Police" Have?
We have a major University close by. It has its own joke of a police force too - marked cars and jeeps and dogs and uniforms and all sorts of toys for guys who couldn't get a job as a city cop. If one of those clowns tried to stop me I'd sue the University out of business.

3. On the campus where I work, all of the Campus Police are State Police.

They have authority anywhere in the state - and they will tell you that. I guess it is different in different states. When I attended the U of Iowa, the campus security was fairly tame - no guns and pretty much decent public servants. Here in the U of Alabama system - a completely different story, heavily armed and pretty beligerant...

4. Depends
In Arizona the "Campus Police" are required to meet the same certification as other Arizona law enforcement officers. They can even pursue suspects who leave the campus area.

So before you think about getting belligerent with one of them, you'd be smart to check out what the requirements of your state is, or you might be in a very unpleasant experience.

7. What Is Not Smart Is Taking Shit From Assholes Who Have No Authority
We are a nation of sheep and I for one do not think it is at all smart to take shit from people.

8. Ah, DUI pullover not the same as 'taking shit from assholes...'
and THEY DO have authority in many states

One does well to select one's battles. You win nothing by letting the battle select you and that is what a knee jerk reaction will get you.
