Who ever said the world is fair?

I'm sure we've all heard that phrase before - probably from our mom. Yet as I read posts here at DU there is this expectation by many that things will just happen because they should.
Or because it's right.
Or just.
Or FAIR.

I speak mainly of the war crimes committed by the Bush Administration. I have no doubts that most if not all of the highest level of the Bush Admin are guilty of advocating and endorsing torture and even using their cronies to try to find legal cover for their crimes. I have no doubt that waterboarding is torture.

What I did doubt is that people like George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Rice, Gonzales, etc. would ever pay for anything illegal they did. Why should it be the case? I watched for 8 years as they started a war based on lies, dismantled oversight into every industry, let the oil companies write our energy policy and outed a CIA agent among other things. And let's face it, the rich and well-connected never seem to really be punished for anything. They always manage to get away with slick lawyers or blaming an underling. They buy their way out or buy their way into a short term at a "resort" prison. Why should this time be any different?

Look at how they went after Clinton wasting our time and money because they didn't like his politics and what was their punishment for that? How about the 2000 election? Was that right or fair or just?

Now, I'm not saying that we shouldn't hope for and push for and fight for investigations and prosecutions because I think we should. But I'm frankly encouraged at the public discussions not just here at DU, but in the MSM as well. People are talking about this and talking about what happens next.

There are lots of reasons why Obama may be trying to stay away from this issue, but I don't want to make excuses for him. However, I'm not going to attack and lose faith in the President who has inherited maybe the worst shitstorm of multiple crisis in U.S. history just because he's not making this a priority. Besides that, I don't think it's his issue to raise. It's time for Congress to begin some process of investigating torture and see where it leads.

I'm hopeful that maybe I'll see justice for these war crimes.

But if not, I won't be surprised.

The world of human affairs is fair only when we humans ACT to be certain that things are fair.

After all most of us know what is fair and what is not on a gut level as well as from more empirical perspectives.
