Did Cheney lie again about requesting CIA to release more memos?
http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/torture/cheney-spox-refuses-to-explain-his-formal-request-for-cia-torture-intel/

<snip>
This is getting downright Kafkaesque: I just reached a spokesperson for former Veep Dick Cheney, and she categorically refused to explain what Cheney meant when he claimed on Fox News last night that he had “formally asked” the CIA to release intelligence allegedly proving that torture works.

As I noted below, Cheney claimed he’d asked the CIA to release intel reports he’d read detailing info successfully collected via torture. But an intelligence source familiar with the situation told me that the CIA has received no such request from Cheney.

So I asked a spokesperson for Cheney at his transitional office in McLean, Virginia, to explain Cheney’s formal request. “He made the request at the end of March,” the spokesperson replied. “It was a formal request that the CIA declassify specific documents.”

I told the spokesperson about the intelligence source’s denial, and asked how procedurally this formal request had been made. The reply: “We have no comment.”

3. No, he requested through the Nat'l Archives...

Cheney Mystery Solved!

* That whole question of whether Dick Cheney asked the CIA to declassify and release intelligence supposedly proving that the torture worked? Turns out Cheney made the request through the National Archives, a spokesperson for the archives confirms.

That means that we may, in fact, see the documents that Cheney claims will demonstrate that the Bush torture program collected a whole bunch of useful intelligence, though it may take awhile.

National Archives spokesperson Susan Cooper confirms that Cheney did submit a request for unspecified documents on March 31st. Cooper said that the National Archives had asked the relevant agency — she wouldn’t say which one, but there’s little reason to doubt that it’s the CIA — for the relevant documents this morning.

Cooper confirmed that the docs Cheney asked for were in fact classified. Keep in mind we have no way of knowing what Cheney actually asked for or whether they really say what Cheney claims. It’s now up to the CIA to make the determination whether to declassify the docs Cheney wants. So this could get very, very interesting in various ways.

6. So If I'm Understanding This Right - Cheney Acknowledges We Used Torture.....
but that it 'ok' because it worked. Did he just implicate himself?

9. There's no question we used torture-for him to deny that would
be foolish. But yes, he's trying to justify it.

What would the National Archives be doing with any CIA documents, never mind classified ones? And if Cheney did indeed ask about torture memos, why insist they were "unspecified"?

Nice try, though...

10. As far as I know, no, he didn't go through the CIA.
I don't understand him going through the archives; maybe he has more friends there, or hopes they'll turn him down?

4. Wow- deja vu, huh?
It's like a little peak back into the Bush Administration. No regard for the facts whatsoever. They just say whatever is most convenient to their argument at that moment.

Sounds like someone is having a memory lapse.

But I can understand the CIA not wanting to make it appear that Dick is STILL running things. After all, lying, cheating, and stealing are the CIA's business!
