Mrs. Obama Speaks Out About Her Household
Mrs. Obama Speaks Out About Her Household

By MARIAN BURROS
WASHINGTON — Reporters are not the only ones with a particularly keen interest in what Michelle Obama wears. Her husband, Mrs. Obama says, notices everything. In fact, she has learned not to wear a certain gray metallic belt when the president is around.

“Barack calls it my ‘Star Trek’ belt,” the first lady said in an interview this week. “He doesn’t understand fashion.”

The interview, which started out on the subject of the new White House vegetable garden, ended up ranging over a variety of household topics, which Mrs. Obama addressed with substantial fun-poking at her husband, her mother and herself.

On the president and her wardrobe:

“He’s always asking: ‘Is that new? I haven’t seen that before.’ It’s like, Why don’t you mind your own business? Solve world hunger. Get out of my closet.”

She teasingly imitated him: “You didn’t need any more shoes. The shoes you had on yesterday were fine. Why can’t you just wear that for the rest of the presidency?”

1. Too cute
for words..thanks, my2sense. This White House organic garden is the best thing ever..ever since FDR days.

My parents made me eat liver, too, and I would sit for hours at the table avoiding the next bite..gag.

3. Yeah I used to wrap mine up and
put it in the trash - underneath other trash. I also would put the lima beans back in the pot when mom wasn't looking - LOL.

20. That "Star Trek belt" was in the news last year
Though some idiot at Newsweek has obviously never heard of "dilithium" and tried to correct it to "the lithium," Obama knows better.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/167755/page/6

On May 20, the night of the primaries in Oregon (a satisfying win in a liberal state) and Kentucky (another discouraging blowout in Appalachia; he had lost West Virginia the week before by 41 points), he stood off-stage at the Des Moines Historical Society Museum in Iowa. He had wanted to go back to the state of his first great triumph to give a speech unofficially kicking off the fall campaign, even though Clinton officially was still in the race. "That's an interesting belt buckle," he said to Michelle, mischievously. She feigned offense and said, "I am interesting, next to you. Surprise, surprise, a blue suit, a white shirt and a tie." Obama grinned and bent down until he was almost at eye level with her waist. He jabbed a playful finger toward her belt buckle, and let loose his inner nerd. "The lithium crystals! Beam me up, Scotty!" Obama squeaked, laughing at his own lame joke as Michelle rolled her eyes.

21. I think one of the old old episodes of the original series...
...possibly even one of the pilot episodes, did in fact use "lithium" rather than "dilithium." But it quickly became "dilithium" forever after.

16. Yes.
My mother just passed on, and I am feeling sorry for my daughters.

AND I know how much she would have enjoyed the Obamas, as we do, and sent me clippings about them (as well as salmonella!)

Mrs. Obama said, “...I’ll get my brother here, and we can spend hours railing about how we hid lima beans in our napkins. And for the days we had to eat liver, we were gagging over it.”

Sounds like dinner at my house when we had split peas--we'd say, "Look over there!" and throw them on each other's plates! We weren't big on liver, either...

17. Reminds me of when
long ago I had a step-father that told me that if I didn't eat the roast on my plate that he would put my pet turtles on my birthday cake that was in the other room... I cried soooo hard and was gagging soooo much that everything in my stomach ended up on the floor - can't remember ever even getting to eat that b-day cake.
