26. I think the majority of us are headed toward, if not to, the bottom.
Who is ready to live on third-world wages?

4. That would depend on
how many people in the household are working. Two people making $35,000 per year or one making $70,000?

i said i wasn't "rich". i'm aware that it is above the median income.

i'd also say that with each of us having a master's degree, we BETTER be making 65K each.

and i ride the bus.

16. OTOH, a family in Omaha making 40-60K can do OK
There are still many 4 bedroom homes here under 200K and 3 BR homes well under $150K.

35. Gladly. We've also got 11 dumpstered frozen dinners in the freezer.
They're some kind of hippy, mustardy, tofu grossness with peanuts that "whole paycheck" tossed, but hey... they're FREE and formerly very expensive. (And no one has gotten salmonella yet. On the up side.)

25. Income is only half of the equation.
You also have to look at the overhead (bills, obligations, etc.)

I'm making half of what I made 10 years ago (retirement does that to you).

But my overhead is significantly less too.

I was married then, and "stuff" (RIP George Carlin) was important to one of us.

Happily single now.... stuff ain't important... and my dollar goes much farther, even though I'm maing half of what I made then.

It ain't always the income that matters.

It's how much overhead you have too.

36. My Juno $4.95 a month
I was grandfathered in so if I ever let it go and then rejoin it will be $9.95. And the library is free broadband but you only get 45 minutes and have to sign up up to a week in advance because the demand is so great.

At my house we go hungry before we give up internet because it's so cost effective.

PS, I'm the same person, with the same values and politics. A little more experience, tho.

15. Let's talk poverty line...
3 kids, AA Degree and never more than $15K a year, and not consistent income at all...

hopefully training and career planning with the EDD will help by the end of 2009, early 2010...just when there may be jobs to be found!

21. Some people with money are NOT greedy bastards who only think of themselves

My wife and I combine to make $180,000.

And I wouldn't mind if our taxes went up. I see no reason why we can't return to the rates of 1993-2001.... when the govt was awash in cash and we were paying down the debt and unemployment was 3.9% and we were all doing well.

I'll never understand why the American people didn't give Gore a resounding landslide victory in that environment.
