Octuplets’ mother wants Oprah to turn her into a $2m TV star
Source: The Times

HE single mother of octuplets born in California last week is seeking $2m (£1.37m) from media interviews and commercial sponsorship to help pay the cost of raising the children.

Nadya Suleman, 33, plans a career as a television childcare expert after it emerged last week that she already had six children before giving birth on Monday. She now has 14 below the age of eight.

Although still confined to an LA hospital bed, she intends to talk to two influential television hosts this week — media mogul Oprah Winfrey, and Diane Sawyer, who presents Good Morning America.

Her family has told agents she needs cash from deals such as nappy sponsorship — she will get through 250 a week in the next few months — and the agents will gauge public reaction to her story.....

4. That's what it is all about
Do something so you can sell your story. Fourteen lives other than yours affected greatly, so what? The $$ and 15 minutes of fame is the goal of life.

She won't be successful since she isn't white and isn't married. The story was the big media miracle until that was discovered. The most sickening thing is that having 8 babies at once was a big blessing and miracle when the story broke (and it was probably assumed, as it was by me "white fundies at work". The use of human generated science and potential medical malpractice weren't discussed until it became clear to the media that this might not be another fundie litter, heck, I don't even know if this lady is "Christian" (I couldn't care less, but I would bet the media does in a big way). Then they started talking about some simple truths, with medical people interviewed to say they would have never created an octuplet situation. Amazing how attitudes changed. I don't know who is sicker, the media or this poor lady peddling her "story".

43. This whole thing is too bizarre
And I believe the article said that her father is Iraqi, intending to return there to work and support himself, his wife their daughter and fourteen little grandchildren. That man, and his wife too, must be out of their minds trying to work out how they are going to cope with so many children who need so much. And this mother who just had to have more children after already having 6 she cannot support without being on the dole, she needs to be in a psychiatric facility and all of those eight babies should be taken into care by DCFS, who are not my favorite people, but once in a while they do the right thing. It's better than all of those babies going home to a two bedroom house that already has 9 people living in it. This is so absurd on so many levels it's really just very difficult to get one's head around it.

8. I have SO many questions about this.
1. Who paid for the in-vitro?

2. WHY, would a doctor implant EIGHT embryos to a women with SIX kids?

This whole thing pisses me off as more info comes out. One of my friend and her husband have spent a small fortune to get pregnant and they are now blessed with twin girls that HOPEFULLY will be born in May. THEY paid for this. THEY are going to pay the medical bills. THEY are going to work to support and raise their daughters.

From what I've ready WE (the people of LA county and the state of California) will be supporting this woman and her kids until Oprah forks over the $$$.

Flame on!

17. You are absolutely right. This situation smells of medical malpractice.
There is no sane physician nor fertility clinic in the USA that would implant 8 in a woman who already had 6 children.

This is definitely a very smelly situation, I don't know whom to blame first.

I hear all 7 pregnancies, (this with the 8 and the others) were in-vitro fertilizationstarts, no natural insemination/fertilization.

Geeesh...I'm all for people meeting their goals in life, but not at the expense of the public.

26. I'll add to that...
The hospital is part of an HMO... will everyone else's health care costs skyrocket because of this? Since when does an HMO use all these resources (multiple post-natal rooms, dozens of nurses and doctors, etc.) for what amounts to an elective procedure, when you can barely get them to help those who have the coverage and have medical issues NOT of their own making? Are they on the take with this too?

28. I don't think she had
the in vitro done at the HMO. That was done at a fetility clinic that she worked at, if I remember correctly.

That clinic needs to be looked into. Implanting 8 eggs seems pretty unethical.

And I've been asking the same question. Who paid for the invitro? One couple that I know spent a fortune - and they had good insurance, too. But insurance covered very little!

Please, if anyone knows the answer, will you please enlighten me? How was the invitro financed?

44. You are spot on
When my husband came home and told me this woman already had 6 kids, lived with her parents and didn't have a husband, I told him he hadn't a clue. I guess I'm the one who didn't have a clue. After watching the local news here in the Greater L.A. area, it soon emerged that he heard correctly. This woman has issues, as my stepdaughter would say, and needs help, but not what she has in mind for herself. And yes, the taxpayers of California and L.A. county will be supporting her while we get IOU's for our state income tax refunds. Ain't it grand?:puke:

This woman clearly doesn't give a damn about these children's psychological or physical well-being. She probably hatched this whole plot years ago and was getting impatient, hence the eight at once.

The same one that did her treatment? In any case, this may be why she was able to get around things, though the fact that they implanted too many embryos means omebody should get their licenses yanked.

21. Lets close that fertility clinic down, if that's the one that did it for her.
First of all, that's a conflict of interest, medical malpractice, endangering the live of 8 fetuses, and the mother.

That's for starters.

Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 03:24 PM by Control-Z
a Dr. Phil interview. Maybe he can arrange help for the entire family. They will absolutely need it. Lots of it, one way or another.

As a society, we cannot turn our back on the children. They are innocent of any wrong doing/crazy muddled thinking. They should not suffer. I don't think they should be celebrated either, as anything but (hopefully) normal healthy children. It is going to take a great amount of money, energy and time from others, outside the family, to accomplish this, and, other than a Dr. Phil update or two, it should be done out of the limelight, imo.
