Too little too late...headlines that should have been breaking a year or more ago
I think it is GREAT that the homeless situation is getting attention. However, in the local paper today, two inch bold headlines "200-300 Homeless in Texarkana". Where were these headlines last year? Or the year before?
Why did the "media" cover Bush's ass for so long?
This is indefensible. Simply inexcusable.
I'm glad someone is taking notice. I really am. But to IGNORE the problem until it is politically expedient is atrocious.

Numbers count.

The Texarkana Homeless Coalition joined forces with the City of Texarkana, Texas, Thursday for a 24-hour count of area homeless people.

The final numbers will be submitted to the Texas Homeless Coalition and could help local nonprofits and the city become eligible for state and federal dollars to help with programs for the homeless.

“Areawide, I think there’s going to be between 200 and 300 at a minimum,” Connie Sloan, Domestic Violence Prevention Inc. deputy director who helped with the count, said of the number of people surveyed. “Last year...

1. Hey Horse!
They are doing that everywhere - you should see the problem in New Orleans.

An estimated 12,000 homeless accounts for 4% of New Orleans' estimated population of 302,000, according to the homeless advocacy group UNITY of Greater New Orleans. The number is nearly double the pre-Katrina homeless count, the group says.

That article was from almost a year ago - and nothing has been done. I think there is a permanent ignore button to some when the issue of homelessness comes up.

2. What I am wondering is...
That they are counting them now so that they can blame the Democrats in the future when the number rises (and you know it will).
And I think you are correct about that permanent ignore button--it is one of the most serious issues facing our society.
Perhaps when they start publishing the pictures of the mothers and children on the sidewalks wearing Gucci and Gymboree, then people will take notice.:(

3. Meanwhile, the msm continues to focus even now a lot on the displaced 6-figure
and upper middle-incomers struggling. Message seems to be: We weren't in economic trouble until these segments began to feel it--and said we were.

The media has had a lot of company from an apathetic Bush ass-covering upper/middle class for a whole lot of years.

Now we get finally get treated to a little of the truth--- but still heavily spiced with stories about rich Hollywood and Park Avenue matrons having to make painful choices between letting the maid go and subletting out their high-maintenance digs to movie producers for porn flicks.

I'm angry about this, too.
