1. when first established,
I believe, it catered to Government Employees, thus an already 'selected' and presumably reliable group.

;-) Seriously, years ago, as in the 60's & 70's, the Government Employees Insurance Company actually limited it's clientele to government employees -- fed, state & municipal. The problem was that that was the only criteria for which they could be insured by Geico, i.e., past driving record, questionable claims -- risk -- was not a factor. Then in 1977, it all came crashing down, they went bankrupt and, as was law at the time, all other insurance companies had to take their clientele and, in essence, assume their liability. I know this because I worked for State Farm at the time and all the other insurance companies were complaining mightily about having to take on "Geico's deadbeats." Now, how they climbed out of all that and resurrected themselves, I don't know.

5. From their website:
The name goes back to GEICO's first customers in 1936, who were government employees and Military personnel. Founder Leo Goodwin went into business determined that he could deliver automobile insurance at reduced prices by selecting prime customer groups and marketing directly to them. Goodwin succeeded in driving down operating costs and passed on the savings to policyholders up front as discounts. GEICO continues to find ways to manage its business costs in order to offer savings to all drivers today.
