Ex-Regent University official pleads guilty to sexual abuse

CHESAPEAKE -- Stephen McPherson, a former Regent University law school assistant dean, pleaded guilty Friday in Chesapeake Circuit Court to sexually abusing children. McPherson, 39, of Chesapeake entered guilty pleas to two counts of forcible sodomy and two counts of object sexual penetration. He is set to be sentenced May 22.

McPherson faces five years to life on each count. Assistant Commonwealth's Attorneys Karen Brown and Minna Sandwich agreed to withdraw nine other felonies against McPherson in return for his pleas.

There was no agreement on a potential sentence, except that prosecutors will recommend a cap of 18 years and six months.

McPherson must wear an electronic monitoring device while free on bond pending sentencing. The judge ordered him to undergo a psychosexual exam and to have no contact with the victims. He wanted to stand and apologize in court Friday, but his attorney, Lawrence Woodward Jr., advised him to wait until sentencing to make a statement.

- He'll very likely be seeing quite a few of his former students as prison mates shortly....

2. Oh Lord...literally.
Another fine example of work from Monica Goodling's alma mater...

This is going to break the heart of a friend of mine. She used to work there. I think she thought that no one could work there without being a good "Christian" person. Oh well, yeah, just like if you are a priest you could never molest kids, either. :sarcasm:

Ex-Regent dean guilty of abuse in 1 city, indicted in another
Stephen McPherson is charged with two counts of indecent liberties by custodian.

The former Regent University law school assistant dean who pleaded guilty in Chesapeake last week to sexually abusing children is facing similar charges in Virginia Beach.

Stephen L. McPherson, 39, is charged with two counts of indecent liberties while in a custodial or supervisory role, according to a special grand jury indictment unsealed Monday. McPherson's wife, Melina Ann McPherson, 37, also was indicted on a charge of indecent liberties while in a custodial or supervisory role. The couple lives in Chesapeake.

The charges stem from abuse that allegedly occurred between August 1996 and August 2000. During that time, the McPhersons served as house parents supervising as many as eight girls at Hope Haven Children's Home on North Landing Road in Virginia Beach. The grand jury indicted the couple on charges related to three girls.

Stephen L. McPherson pleaded guilty Friday in Chesapeake Circuit Court to two counts of forcible sodomy and two counts of object sexual penetration. Prosecutors withdrew nine other felony charges in exchange for his guilty pleas, and they agreed to recommend a cap of 18 years and six months in prison. His sentencing is May 22.

He was free on bond but ordered to wear an electronic monitoring device.
