Someone wrote it as a joke for other staffers figuring that he/she would change it later on -- or that the editor would read it, have a laugh, and change it. The editor was rushed, didn't see it, and just published it.

It's not uncommon to have this happen in newsrooms, when people are screwing around, thinking that someone else will correct it.

One of the most famous was back during the Carter presidency, when Jimmy gave a speech on something or other, and some wise ass at the Boston Globe put a joke head on it that read "More Mush from the Wimp." It got into print, much to the embarrassment of the Globe.
