SCOTUS already overturned Brown vs. Board of Education and nobody here even noticed. After all, I mean, who sends their kids to inner-city public school anymore anyhow? It's far more important to gat a Leader in the White House, y'know?

1. On another note, the MLK memorial will have no public service component and built w/ corporate cash.
Including certain sellout relatives who insisted that the original design for the statue be censored as "too confrontational".

There used to be an MLK national library in the city, which is the sort of memorial King would have wanted. The city wants to shut it down because local developers consider it a magnet for homeless people, who sleep outside its front doors.

2. What I'm driving at: If MLK were alive he'd be Putting Pressure on Obama
To live up to expectations,

just like he did his own contemporary black leaders.

(The Baptist Church wanted to kick him out. Interesting fact, no?)

Not resting on his laurels and patting him on the back like all the failed, formerly progressive civil rights leaders and formerly, if ever progressive Democratic elected officials are doing.

3. Or more to the point: Obama will not be able to prevent the final erosion of our remaining rights
Edited on Mon Jan-19-09 10:24 AM by Leopolds Ghost
His election will just ease the pain of the next eight years.

Which may well be the intention of the folks who allowed him (but not the previous two Dems) to be elected.

4. Hence, the danger in the quote "moving forward" absent looking back.

5. Somewhere in the article it says whites are less optimistic about MLK's vision.
I hate the phrase "moving forward and not looking back" when it is used by most people in this country (I hesitate to say "Americans" -- why should they get to call themselves that by virtue of birth when they don't care about the revolutionary values on which it was founded? They are mere consumers.) The phrase implies "history, who needs it?" It is the blindness of utter and final entropy expressed as inescapable ignorance, an epistemological black hole that prevents common discourse with people who have no experience of what you are referring to, the same force that inexorably grinds all human knowledge eventually into dust.
