Many Thanks to the DU'er who Called in C-Span's Washington Journal about Howard Dean's efforts!
WaJournal had Professor Henry Farrell from Georgetown University on this morning and he made a statement to another caller saying who was talking about Activism where he said that "Howard Dean's strategy of Meet Up's and grassroots had not worked because he didn't win the nomination." The professor went on to say that "..Obama was sucessful because he ran a top down campaign." He also said that older people would have a hard time with the new internet organizing. (HA!)

A DU'er called in and called him out on Howard Dean's efforts by talking about how the MeetUps and Internet had allowed people to connect together who had common interests in democracy. Whoever that DU'er is they were one of the best defenders of Dean's 50 State strategy and how the internet was first effectively used by Howard Dean supports that I've ever heard call in on C-Span. And, they gave a plug to DU! :yourock:

BTW: The professor claims he is a Lefty Dem and writes for an academic blog called "Crooked Timber." However, he seemed to be more DLC to me in his dismissal of Howard Dean and how Obama built on Dean's work and that only "young people" are politically active on the internet.

1. Professor No Nothing
Professor is totally wrong on all counts about Dean. In my area people who never worked on a political campaign came out for Dean and then continued to work for Obama. As far as his comment that only young people use the internet, I am 71 years old and am on the internet every day.

2. K&R I was watching this morning too! It was great....even Mr. Snappy
heard it and backed it up so we could re-listen.

The "professor" isn't of this world....: only the young. poo

7. I Would Say
Edited on Sat Jan-17-09 04:55 PM by Crisco
It was Obama's ability to appeal to ground-up that won him the support of the netroots, but also, his appeal to those who expect / want a top-down organizing POTUS that got him the support of the Big DC Boys and Girls Clubs. Dean did not appeal to that latter group. Not enough, anyway. For right now, at least, you have to appeal to both groups to win the prize.

8. For those interested in hearing her statements, it's in the last ten minutes
of the Prof. Farrell segment on the 1/17/09 Wa.Journal @ www.c-span.org site.

She also mentioned the Dixie Chicks & how DU supported them. :)

9. Her defense of the Dixie Chicks and the rest of her dialog was INCREDIBLE...
I hope she will fess up who she is here on DU...because it was great to hear her voice given the illiterates that post on C-Span's Washington Journal! But, maybe she wants to remain anonymous...and that's okay, too.

12. What is the sound of wonderful folks fighting back
The internet is the greatest thing to happen to us elderlies since Metamucil. I built my thundering rig from scratch adding new components as better ones come along. Much younger folks call me about problems they are having building theirs and I usually can put them on the right track. So much for the "professor" 's take on old folks and the internet. So rather than slinking off into a corner and waiting to die; It is our window on the world and our interaction with it has become a pain in the ass to the pugs, but a boon to the dems where we can send our 5 or 10 dollar donations on line which mount up big time.
