Religious-right legal center "Liberty Counsel" accidently endorses gay marriage.
They don't realize that they did, but they did. In complaining about a hate-crimes bill being introduced in Congress, their guy claimed that it was constitutionally dubious because "The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution guarantees equal protection under the law..."

Obvious corrolary: if the 14th Amendment applies to gay people, then it conveys equal legal protections, including the legal benefits of marriage.

1. You forgot
There's the secret exception to all legal arguments put forth by these dingbats, which can be stated in blanket form as follows: "Except for people we decide we don't like." So, recognizing that our society has historically been antagonistic towards certain identifiable classes of persons, and making provision for them in the law, only applies to those identifiable classes that Liberty Counsel likes or tolerates. So making laws protecting some chicks is okay, but making laws that protect those goddam fags isn't.

See?

On a slightly more serious note, consistency in the application of their own arguments isn't exactly their hallmark.

6. You're right of course that all their arguments are basically so much fluff.
But I found it hillarious that one of their "team" is undermining their own arguments. One of the standard applause lines for the fundies is that "equal protection" doesn't cover sexual behavior, and yadda, yadda, yadda...

2. You're assuming they consider gay people to be people.

5. Seeing how
women aren't required to be given equal protection by the 14th amendment, I somehow doubt the legal reasoning that gays would be entitled to it.
