Action alert in Georgia on Women's rights.

The Georgia Legislature is considering House Bill 147 which mandates that all abortion providers give patients a list of all facilities that offer free sonograms. Nearly all the facilities in Georgia are "crisis pregnancy centers" with the main goal of doing whatever is necessary to convince a women not to have an abortion.

The purpose of this law is cut down on the approx 30,000 abortions a year in Georgia. This is one more requirement added on to 24hr waiting periods and a mandatory lecture on government benefits for prenatal care and childbirth.

At the same time, Georgia is cutting benefits for Peachcare - it's state supplemented child healthcare program. It's estimated initially 3000-5000 children will lose healthcare benefits because of these cuts and more are sure to follow in the future.


These efforts to restrict abortion do not benefit women. It is insulting to women that the "nannies" in the Georgia legislature think the women of Georgia are too stupid or too hopped up on hormones to make sound reproduction decisions.

Clearly the Georgia legislature doesn't give a fig about the women and children of Georgia. There is no state assistance for family planning (avoid the pregnancy in the first place) and with the cuts to Peachcare they clearly do not care about children once they are born.

I urge you to contact the Georgia legislature and tell them to get their priorities straight. Reject HB 147. Stop insulting women with anti-abortion laws and start supporting more help with birth control (especially in rural areas) and in healthcare for children.
