CNN: "Commentary: Rick Warren foes aren't practicing tolerance"
That's exactly how they frame the issue. Those supporting gay marriage are just so intolerant about...well, the intolerant.

====

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (CNN) -- Proponents of redefining marriage couldn't wait for the new president to be sworn in before demanding that he erase from the inauguration ceremony a prominent American who disagrees with them.

The target of their rhetorical bombardment is Rick Warren, the popular Christian pastor from Southern California.

President-elect Barack Obama has asked Warren to give the invocation at his inauguration. Not so fast, cries Kathryn Kolbert, head of People for the American Way, an organization that claims to advance equality and freedom of speech and religion (but not for Rick Warren and those who agree with his marriage views) in a piece published on CNN.com.

Warren's grave sin? Along with 52 percent of California voters, he supported California's Proposition 8, which affirmed the definition of marriage as between one man and one woman. What a radical!

69. I'm not the gop's definition of tolerant
& since when is INCLUDING someone/group 'redefining' it? Was it redefining marriage when interracial couples were 'allowed to marry, legally'? I thought the definition of marriage was love, between 2 people who were willing to mesh their lives together & (hopefully) stick by each other, thru thick & thin.

8. I smell something funny.
And no, I am not a contortionist.

That article fucking wreaks. Let me get this straight: People like Rick Warren tell lies about gay people and whip up their followers into a violent fury that causes gay people to be beaten, murdered, raped, and every other violent image imaginable, yet somehow...gay people are the intolerant ones?

They vote to take away what precious few rights we have and we say we don't like it. So, that, somehow, makes us intolerant? :wtf:

And we did WHAT to deserve that kind of bullshit accusation?

13. Yeah, that reachy-outy thing...
how's that working out? This shit is from today...

more from the article Bluebear links:

"Though Warren will only be praying for the country's future (not giving a speech about marriage), Kolbert and others are pressuring Obama to set a precedent for his administration of publicly shunning someone who supports the traditional definition of marriage.

They want people like Warren silenced and ostracized for their "hate speech," defined today as disagreeing with their agenda to impose a redefinition of marriage on an unwilling America. Obama, to his credit, has resisted their strident demands.

The attacks on Warren are the latest in a series of coercive, intimidating attacks on supporters of traditional marriage.

Now, activists have ramped up their strong-arm tactics by pushing the president-elect to ban Warren from appearing at the inauguration.

This is amazingly audacious, in light of the fact that on marriage, the overwhelming majority of Americans and, indeed, humanity, agrees with Warren. Americans have voted to preserve marriage in all 30 states where it has been on the ballot by an average vote of more than 65 percent."

The author of this piece is the lawyer who managed to get all the same-sex 2004 marriages invalidated in California.

He's listed in Sourcewatch as a member of the Dominionist group Alliance Defense Fund.

15. It's commentary, as in a "guest editorial"
And yes, the author sounds like a complete dick. (Pun intended, although the joke's a bit . . . um . . . limp.)

However, it's not CNN framing the issue, it's CNN salaaming to wingnuts for fear they'll accidentally watch Fux News or something. We're talking craven pandering, not homophobia.

Earth to numbnuts: public obloquy is NOT synonymous with censorship. If I tell you to shut up because you're a moron, that is not the same thing as the FBI frogmarching you to a concentration camp because you made a joke about planes blowing up.

Ah, trotting out all the old staples. "Societies function best." "52% of people agree with me, so I must be right!" "Rick Warren has a constitutional right to spread hate, and if he isn't given this prime pulpit, why, it's tyranny!"

What a tool. I was waiting for "some of my best friends" to make his red-crayon scribblings complete.

19. Fundie lawyer:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2006/jun/06/20060606-090944-4652r/

"The court's language may be flowery, but its point is clear. Congress has the constitutional authority to require states to adopt a uniform definition of marriage. This is a separate issue from the question answered by the principle of federalism, which presupposes states regulate marriage but gives them no authority to redefine it.

Members of the House and Senate should vote in favor of the proposed Marriage Protection Amendment without concern they are violating a long-held understanding of federalism. Instead, they are fulfilling the historical understanding of Congress' role in the interplay of federalism and the definition of marriage."

Jordan Lorence is senior counsel with the Alliance Defense Fund in Scottsdale, Ariz. In 2004, he argued the case before the California Supreme Court in which it invalidated the marriage licenses issued by San Francisco to same-sex couples

Maybe in some circles.. some very narrow, close-minded circles. :eyes:

"This attorney's intolerance of allowing other people's lives to be THEIRS and not to be dictated by his opinion is breathtakingly "I speak for God" talk, and it's slanderous.

God said judge not lest ye be judged - Jordan - that means you, too! We do not say you can or cannot be married (if you are) to whomever you may love. How dare you intervene in someone else's life in such a intrusive manner.

You are shameful and pig-headed."

Never forget what Dr. Martin Luther King said: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." MLK - Says it all!

This is really lousy reporting too as well - I would love to have this idiot look into the "real" Rick Warren and his Dream of making the world into his little "Purpose Driven Nations"! Why isn't someone in the MSM doing this? Are they paid off or do they think there will be a backlash? They sure as hell don't give a crap what the real victims of the diatribe on women and GLBT issues are! Anyone that isn't upset with this idiocy should not call themselves a liberal!

If they want links to prove out what I am saying try these:
