21. Have you ever met anyone named Alexandria?
I know a few Alexandras, but not one Alexandria.

It seems odd to me, living here, for it to be a name - I'm not disputing you, understand. Sort of like naming a kind Philadelphia.................

With that pronunciation, it's a gorgeous name.

In fact, from now on, I'm gonna tell people I live in "Ale(gutteral)andria."

(Everyone's thrilled with their t-shirts, I hear. Well done, Mira!)

Happy New Year, my creative friend!

from where the buses dump us. I'm serious. I have my 16 yr old grandson in tow. We have come twice before from NC to protest. It's time to celebrate but I do worry about safety and the crowds.

50. Two hour delays are the rumor d' jour
Plan ahead and if the Metro looks overcroweded...see if you can hoof it. Take the Metro as close as you can get...say Roslynn, Pentagon, or Pentagon City if you are coming from Arlington/Alexandria and hoof it across the bridge using the walkways.

Russian familiar names can give a feminine ending for male subjects.

For other Slavic languages Sasha will inevitibly be a female however.

I went to school with a Natalie whose nickname was Nan--for her initials.

I also know of a Natalie whom everyone refers to as Kim. Go figure.

"Her name was McGill, and she called herself Lil, but everyone knew her as Nancy."

35. Natasha is diminutive for Natalia in Russian
Sasha is diminutive for either Alexandr or Alexandra. Rather like "Kim" or "Sid", they could fit either gender.

But since the Obamas aren't Russian, they can choose whatever nicknames they want for their kids.

BTW, there's a fairly well known African American actress whose name is identical to my late mother's, who was Russian, but I expect she pronounces it a little differently.
