he seems to have worked it out with the girl who repelled his advances. Turns out she's pregnant with another guy's kid, and that's why she couldn't go out with the columbine kid, so it wasn't really anything to do with him personally. (Plus, now he gets to be there for her. Oy!) If it's that kid, I wouldn't worry. :) It's just another Saturday night in teenage emo land.

I remember the bb.com suicide, and that person just kept repeating what he was going to do over and over, whereas this kid seemed to perk up the second he found out why his muse rejected him.

But you're right. Making threats against others, no matter how insipid the reason, deserves attention. If he had only left it at "I'm so depressed and love sick I could die."

People ignore this kind of thing all the time as the ravings of yet another teenage lunatic having a bad day.

"Teenage lunatics" having bad days can screw up multiple lives precisely because they have a lack of appreciation for the consequences of their actions. I've seen one too many stories (and witnessed the aftermath once) of everything from kids going on sexual binges to crime sprees to killing themselves announced on public message boards and either ignored or egged on and then finding out too late that it was for real.

Err on the side of caution in these cases, imo.

It should be standard practice to lock a thread after 30-60-90 days of inactivity.

if someone needs to add a comment after that time, they can start a new thread and provide a reference link to the original one.

I think it should be taken seriously - who would post that unless they are troubled in some way. Even if it is a prank - that type of post should still be reported.

It seems from the internet suicides that do make the news, the people kept posting for a long period of time stating their intentions, whereas this kid just seemed to want to unload. He obviously has probs though. Who would even post anonymously that they harbor feelings of wanting to kill a bunch of people? Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing if someone gives him a call, even a year later, to see where he's at.
