Our local news was promoting today as a big shopping day
Yes, according to our local news station, it's the biggest shopping day of the year next to Black Friday! They have LIVE coverage from the mall parking lot. The mall is open at 6:00 am. By 6:20 they breathlessly declare that possibly as many as twenty or thirty cars have shown up. Cue the helicopter over another mall showing...er...a mostly empty parking lot.

4. Ours too. They wanted a mad rush to the malls and stores..
Hoping people would use up their gift cards and overspend their gift cards.. or return ugly stuff for something else that might just be a little bit more expensive. On the other side of the report, they had a lawyer talking about stores going into bankrupcy if they don't make money this last quarter.

5. We're going to see a lot of stores going out of business
I received one gift card and plan to spend it quick just in case the store is about to go under. I don't think Borders is about to go under, but today you just can't tell.

7. Borders is in trouble actually.
Now whether they'll go belly up, who knows, but they are hurting according to financial reports I've seen.

Actually I love that I have $100 that must be spent on books.

6. On the other hand, there isn't a whole lot of news to cover on the day after Christmas, particularly
if it's a Friday. They have to fill that time somehow. Newspapers too. It's not like they get a memo from BigMediaConspiracy Inc. It's just what works on a slow day.

8. Well I needed some stuff for a birthday and new sheets
the store wasn't that full

But it is sad that people fail to understand that our economy is set to fail or succeed on consumption

This was a policy decision made in the 1930s, read that again... but modern consumerism goes to the Roosevelt admin, fully implemented by trumman and finally became the way of life by the 70s

There are plenty of laws of unintended consequences, but the economy DEPENDS on consumption

I doubt the news critters kNOW why this is so, but it is so
