New Report: White Vigilantes shot and killed blacks in Katrina

I came across this in the NATION mag and was blown away. White Vigilantes mowed down African-Americans as they tried to get to safty in the aftermath of Katrina.

The reporter has sites video taped evidence of whites in Algiers (white area that did not flood) talking about how they killed blacks to save their land.

There are hospital records as well and a doctor who treated injuries and dealt with the fatalities. Other bodies were left at the side of the road.

Numerous African-Americans have been sharing their stories but so far these stories have not reached the mainstream.

As Alexander and Collins fled, Herrington ran in the opposite direction, his hand pressed to the bleeding wound on his throat. Behind him, he says, the gunmen yelled, "Get him! Get that nigger!"

29. Not all of Algiers is a white area

though there certainly are plenty of white areas over there. "Algiers" refers to the part of New Orleans on the West Bank of the Mississippi, across from the French Quarter, Uptown, etc. The name came from its position across the water from the main city, like the other Algiers is to France.

Most of Algiers Point, except for the gentrified part right near the Canal St. ferry, is an African American area; the notorious Fischer projects were located there. Farther out, there are several apartment complexes that are populated largely by AA Section 8 recipients.
