It sounds like a routine from Chocolate News: "When we come back: The first Vietnamese member of the Congressional Black Caucus speaks out!" But this is New Orleans, where the real becomes surreal:

http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/rep.-caos-interest-in-cbc-could-spark-clash-2008-12-12.html

There could be another clash in the offing about who should be able to join the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC).

Anh "Joseph" Cao, the Republican who upset indicted Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.) in a delayed election earlier this month, has expressed interest in joining the caucus, presumably because he represents a minority district.

Cao, the first Vietnamese-American elected to Congress, told his hometown paper, the Times-Picayune of New Orleans, that he's interested in joining the CBC. He also said he's seeking a seat on the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Appropriations Committee.

I don't know whether to  or  !

I hope all of you who wanted "Dollar Bill" out so badly are satisfied. This assclown, in addition to being Boner's new BFF, may soon be able to challenge Mayor Nagin in the city's annual foot-eating contest. :eyes:

1. I don't know -- it makes sense
If you believe that one of the goals of CBC is to join together to address issues involving African-Americans.

4. That's what Steve Cohen from Memphis thought, too
the only other non-black member from a black majority district, namely, Harold Ford's old seat. He was quickly rebuffed.

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) learned that after he was elected to succeed Rep. Harold Ford Jr. (D) in a majority-black district in 2006. Cohen talked about trying to join the caucus but backed off when leaders made it clear he wouldn’t be allowed to join.

The issue arose, legitimately, once before, in a similar situation where Connecticut Dems couldn't agree on a candidate and honked the 5th District seat to black repuke Gary Franks. Franks was suspected of running to repuke leadership and tattling on the CBC's strategy. :eyes:

3. Yeah, I don't see that happening, since they wouldn't let Steve Cohen, who actually
votes in line with most of the liberal Democratic members of the Congressional Black Caucus, join. It will be interesting to see how "left" Cao will feel the need to vote to attempt to hold his seat in this solidly Democratic district, but I doubt membership in the CBC will be something he will be able to use towards increasing his popularity in the district.

5. Well if it means anything in 2 years this idiot will be out of a job too
and perhaps a decent person will represent the district - not republican and not corrupt

6. I fear he will not go gentle into that good night
a) he could try for mayor in 2010 :scared:

b) speaking of 2010, they're gonna get hammered by reapportionment. Unless more people resetlle there in the next year and a half than have in the previous three, the 2nd CD as we know it will cease to exist. Whatever emerges from it will be considerably more repuke-friendly. :puke:
